NYC shootings and homicides declined in January, while other major crimes see an uptick

Shootings and homicides citywide dipped in January, despite rises in other major crimes including assault and robbery, the NYPD said Friday.

Shootings in New York decreased last month by about 26%, with 73 incidents, compared to 99 incidents in January 2022. Shootings declined most steeply in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan, the NYPD said.

At the end of 2022, stats showed homicides were down by 11% compared to 2021. This decline continued in January, with 30 homicide victims, one less than in the same month last year.

Other major crimes including robbery, felony assault, burglary and car theft went up 4% in January 2023 compared to January 2022.

Across the city, police recorded a 15% increase in felony assault with 2,056 incidents last month compared to 1,790 in January 2022, and a 7% increase in burglary with 1,298 incidents last month compared to 1,211 in January 2022.

Cops recorded a 5% increase in robbery, with 1332 incidents in January 2023 compared to 1,265 in January 2022, and a 5% increase in car theft with 1,223 incidents in January 2023 compared to 1,164 in January 2022.

Cops nabbed 4,420 criminals last month, compared to 3,410 in January 2022 — a 30% increase, which was the highest month-to-month increase since 1999.

Police Commissoner Keechant Sewell said “more work … is required when it comes to certain categories of crime, and we are determined in our efforts to reverse these trends.“
