Readers sound off on a citizen debate, Pence’s book and retro zombies

Whitsett, N.C.: As we all know, Donald Trump has announced that he will run again for president despite the many legal actions he is facing. The insurrection was a scary event, and whether or not Trump wants to own his influence on that horrific day, he still has many followers who may want to behave like that again because America is very divided politically. Trump will not bridge that gap but rather will help increase it, which America does not need.

I challenge former President Trump to a debate on a public platform because I represent many small voices out here who don’t want him to have the job again. We are looking for a new candidate who can offer America a better and fresher start from that office. I want to bring us all to the table again as citizens included in our political system. I want us to have a voice. I would do the job for free because I’m not looking for power or big money, I am simply a regular citizen who has had enough of seeing how things are going with the division of our country.

I can’t reach Trump on my own. I need everyone to write him and let him know that you want him to agree to a debate with me. I know I can beat him. Deonia Neveu

Brooklyn: Like a cancer that was in remission but has recurred, Donald Trump is seeking to re-occupy the White House. He knows deep down that he’s highly unlikely to be re-elected. This resurrection has very little to do with a burning desire to be president or with making America “great again.” This is all about grifting. He knows how much money his cult of truth-denying zombies will throw at this third campaign. All he has to do is go on a national rally tour, pay attendees to be conspicuous opposite the cameras with a few token Black people (who he hates) prominently thrown in, and spew his damned lies citing bogus statistics and viciously badmouthing the current administration. His slavish acolytes, in their ignorance, will fall all over themselves to send their money into his coffers. Stan Rosenson

Boynton Beach, Fla.: Looks like Attorney General Merrick Garland simply did not have the courage to indict Trump for his blatant disregard for the law and his criminal activity related to the coup attempt and theft of presidential documents. Garland has kicked the American justice can down the road and usurped his responsibility to uphold the law. This is truly a sad day in history for American jurisprudence. William T. Bredin

Jacksonville, Fla.: I watched CNN’s supposed town hall with ex-Vice President Mike Pence the other day and got sick to my stomach! Why? Because in every other sentence, this ex-lapdog of the disgraced ex-prez muttered “you can read about it in my new book.” And CNN’s Jake Tapper just sat there and let Pence get away with his free advertising! Only now, after six years, this silver-haired ex-VP of the worst presidential administration that ever existed claims that his ex-boss “acted recklessly” in whipping up the insurrection. The only thing this book will be good for is burning in order to roast marshmallows for Christmas! Carl Hafner

Valley Stream, L.I.: The COVID pandemic continues. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration needs to make a permanent protection plan. We need to protect patients and health-care workers. Eileen Laracuenti

Rego Park: Last week, I had a non-inclusive thought about the indigenous people of Borneo. I must repent. I could ask Abe Foxman for forgiveness. Maybe I could reach out to the irritable bowel community. Whatever, I will come out of this a better person. Jeff Rosenblatt

Scranton, Pa.: On a recent visit to my daughter and son-in-law in Brooklyn, I was aghast at the behavior of so many of the bike-riding delivery people, recklessly cutting in and out of traffic, abruptly darting in front of vehicles and routinely running red lights. A few times, the riders avoided looking like squashed bugs on someone’s grill only because of alert drivers. It’s time they were licensed and carried insurance like all other drivers. They operate motorized vehicles, after all. And heavy fines should be levied against any business that uses any riders not licensed and insured. Tom Mielczarek

Manhattan: I was headed up to Lincoln Center on a Citi Bike on Thursday night. I got to a light around 45th St. and Eighth Ave. and on my right, hugging the side of the bike lane, was a police officer on horseback. On my left was a large electric motorcycle. I looked up at the police officer and said, “Can you tell him not to ride his motorcycle in the bike lane?” He told me that it wouldn’t matter because the guy would get back in it a few streets up. All of a sudden, the reality set in for me: Life in the bike lane follows Darwin’s theory of evolution — it is survival of the fittest. Maybe our next mayor will find a solution. Leonard Smoke

Manhattan: New York City’s Local Law 97 is one of the most important urban climate laws in the world. If enforced properly, it will significantly curb the 70% of the city’s carbon emissions from buildings. It will also create tens of thousands of new jobs, clean our air and lower our energy bills. The law was applauded around the world when it passed in 2019. Flash forward to where we are: Mayor Adams is tasked with deciding the rules for how the law will be implemented and enforced. This process will determine if it has teeth and creates action or is just watered-down political greenwashing. The administration must fully enforce pollution limits through clear penalties and limit the purchasing of Renewable Energy Credits to reach compliance. Closing these corporate loopholes is essential to making sure the billionaire real estate industry updates its buildings. David Rysdahl

Garwood, N.J.: Voicer Louie Scarcella approvingly repeats the myth that the Polish people attacked German Panzer tanks on horseback to illustrate their courage. This is the second time in the past year or so that The News has printed such a letter. The story was concocted to show how stupid the Slavic Poles were as opposed to the modern, master-race Nazis in their new armored Panzers. Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels made it up. Scarcella and others would do well to google the World War II Battle of Casino that took place during the brutal Italian campaign. Cite that as an example of the ferocious courage of the Polish soldier as opposed to repeating the tired canard from Goebbels. Michael Gordeuk

Central Islip, L.I.: I was trying to get my wife’s attention. Nothing worked. Then I sat down in my recliner and got comfortable. That worked! Thomas Sarc

Brooklyn: Voicer George DeSantos said I can’t slam cops for missing their targets 80% of the time (versus a violin player missing notes) because violin players are not being shot at or chased by someone with a knife. Dear George: The police miss their targets on the gun range! Let’s see you spin that one! Mildred Manham

Islip, L.I.: I stumbled across a lovely article from 2020 about horror movies (”From ‘Nosferatu’ to ‘Get Out,’ ” Oct. 16). As a geek/fan of the movie “Night of the Living Dead” who has seen it at least 100 times, I thought it worth mentioning that the photo attributed to that movie is actually not from it. The caption reads: “Romero’s zombies, played by nonactors, were unnervingly normal looking in ‘Night of the Living Dead’.” The “zombies” appear to be a group of teenagers or young adults, unaffiliated with Romero, Image Ten, et al., attempting to recreate the style of the movie many years later. While that’s just speculation, I can confidently state that none of the “zombies” in the photo are in the movie. Hardly the most pressing concern in the world, but I thought it is worth a mention for the sake of correctness. Mark Wrynn
