Worker dies at Bronx construction site
A worker was killed Thursday morning in the Bronx, possibly crushed by a machine, at a state-run construction site where housing for the homeless is being built, authorities said.
The incident happened just before 11:30 a.m. on Carter Ave. near E. 176th St. in Tremont.
One worker died at the scene, police said, while medics took a wounded second person to St. Barnabas Hospital, according to the FDNY. That person’s condition was not immediately clear.
Workers at the site would not comment and a spokesman for Joy Construction Corp., the contractor involved, said he couldn’t comment while the incident is being investigated by authorities.
The Housing and Community Renewal, a state agency, is in charge of the project.
Plans call for 154 “affordable” homes, including 86 with “on-site services for the homeless,” according to the agency.
“We grieve with the family of the deceased and members of the construction crew over this tragic accident,” said a HCR spokesman, who said he had no details about the death.
The city Department of Buildings website indicates 17 complaints linked to the Carter Ave. address, none since 2017. It was not immediately clear when the current project started.
