Man kills brother with AR-15 in Whatcom County

A Seattle man has confessed to killing his brother on State Route 20 near Newhalem Monday, Aug. 9, after shooting him multiple times with an AR-15 style rifle.

At 4:00 a.m. National Parks Rangers from the North Cascade National Park responded to reports of a single shot fired, followed by a series of gunfire in rapid succession. Police located 40-year-old John Thomson sitting in his vehicle nearby and told police he did not hear any shots.

After continuing to check alongside the highway, investigators eventually noticed a large amount of blood on the guard rail near where they spoke to Thompson and noticed bullet holes in the guard rail.

Looking down the embankment below, they found the body of Robert Thompson, 69, dead.

John Thompson was later found and detained in Newhalem, and police found an AR-15 style rifle in the car visible from the window.

WCSO Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators, and Patrol Deputies were requested to respond to Newhalem to continue the investigation.

Thompson was interviewed and confessed to the shooting with intent to kill.

Thompson is also a convicted felon, having previously been arrested for two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Currently, Thompson is booked in Whatcom County Jail.
