Mark the date: Bluenose II will set sail for Guysborough this summer

GUYSBOROUGH – In recent years the Bluenose II has thrilled Municipality of the District of Guysborough residents by visiting Canso and Whitehead. This summer, the iconic schooner is scheduled to be at anchor in the entrance of Guysborough Harbour on Thursday, August 25.

Guysborough Waterfront Development Society (GWDS) Chair Paul Long told The Journal in an email that the reason the vessel didn’t plan to enter the harbour was “due to old charts indicating a lack of water.”

Although Guysborough residents and visitors would love to see the Bluenose II sail into the harbour, Long added, “We will take this for now and hope that between now and then we may be able to have someone from their organization check out the water levels and channel coming into the harbour. We think there is plenty of room and depth, but they are going by charts … so hopefully we can get them closer.”

The Bluenose II visit to Guysborough is the ship’s only stop scheduled this season in the Strait area. Long wrote, “We worked with our MLA’s office and Develop Nova Scotia to attract the Bluenose to come to Guysborough. We have been chasing this for a couple of years, so it is nice to finally get the iconic sailing vessel to come to our waters. The GWDS will be doing something that evening as well; plans to be finalized soon so that we can attract other boaters to the marina.”

A visit from the Bluenose II is always an attraction and Long wrote that it would be “a great event to have for the waterfront and tourism in general.”

To the best of Long’s knowledge, this will be the vessel’s first visit to Guysborough.
