Gretna Green were the two magic words spoken by Kelly during Monday’s episode of the ITV show.

After getting to know one another and being willing to act like an engaged couple in an attempt to win a free holiday, the young couple became smitten with one another and decided to make their engagement official.

But the news didn’t go down well with Dev Alahan and Kelly’s guardians, Maria Connor and Gary Windass, when they found out.

As minors, Kelly and Aadi (played by Adam Hussain) need their permission to get hitched in the UK, prompting the wayward teen to look into other places where they can walk down the aisle without anybody’s approval.

This led her straight to Gretna Green in Scotland, where teens as young as 16 can get married without their parents’ consent.

Some viewers are fearing the worst for Kelly as actress Millie Gibson is known to have quit the Manchester-based drama.

However, following Kelly and Aadi’s decision to elope, diehard Corrie fans pointed out that Gretna Green has quite the history in the cobbles.

In 1997, another young couple turned their sights to the village in the hopes of making their union official.

Swarming over to social media, many viewers pointed out that Kelly and Aadi’s elopement storyline was too similar to Leanne Battersby and Nick Tilsley’s.

“Didn’t Nick and Leanne run off to Gretna Green many years ago?”, one viewer asked on Facebook.

Another responded: “I remember Nick and Leanne eloping to Gretna Green and look how that turned out.”

“Yet another rehashed storyline Kelly and Aadi going to Gretna Green just like Nick and Leanne did years ago”, a third complained.

One viewer penned: “Wonder if they will stay in the same place where Nick and Leanne was when they got married in Scotland.”

“First thing I said to my husband was ‘Nick & Leanne did that!'”, another echoed.

But another viewer jumped in and simply argued: “Is it a rehashed story line from years ago? Well maybe it’s a recurring theme in real life. People go to Gretna Green to get married.”

Leanne (played by Jane Danson) and Nick (then portrayed by Adam Rickitt) embarked on a whirlwind romance in the nineties after the former moved in with her family at No.5.

The then-troubled teen and her new boyfriend fled to Gretna Green and got married but wedded bliss was short-lived.

Their marriage fell apart when Nick forced Leanne to have an abortion and her life spiralled.
