No 10 has received the long-awaited report by senior civil servant Sue Gray into the Partygate scandal, the Cabinet Office has confirmed.

The findings of the inquiry — first launched in December — will soon be made public, before Boris Johnson addresses MPs in the Commons.

It comes after the Metropolitan Police concluded its own investigation into breaches of the Covid regulations in Downing Street last week, with the force issuing 126 fixed penalty notices.

Officials impacted by the Gray inquiry, including those to be named, were written to ahead of its publication, allowing them to have a chance to respond before it was finalised.

Ms Gray is expected to be highly critical of the culture in Downing Street which led to the repeated violations of Covid restrictions.

The report is also expected to criticise cabinet secretary Simon Case, but he has made clear he will not be resigning and the prime minister will not sack him.

Average petrol prices have exceeded £1.70 per litre for the first time

Average petrol prices have exceeded £1.70 per litre for the first time, new figures show.

The average price of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts on Tuesday was 170.4p, according to data firm Experian Catalist.

Diesel also reached a record high of 181.4p per litre.

Petrol has become around 41p per litre more expensive over the past 12 months, adding around £23 to the cost of filling a typical 55-litre family car.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said the price of petrol has reached “another unfortunate landmark”.

“While wholesale prices may have peaked for the time being last week, they are still worryingly high, which means there’s no respite from the record-high pump prices which are so relentlessly contributing to the cost-of-living crisis,” he said.

Government won’t introduce windfall tax, energy boss predicts

The Times and The Daily Telegraph reported this morning that the measures could be introduced in day.

But Alistair Phillips-Davies told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I don’t think this Government is going to impose a windfall tax on successful sectors that are delivering for the UK and creating jobs and making sure that we avoid these crises in the future by bringing in lower-cost energy from indigenous sources.”

Former civil service chief: It would be ‘bizarre’ for Case to take blame for Partygate

It would be “bizarre” if cabinet secretary Simon Case ends up taking responsibility for Partygate and prime minister Boris Johnson does not, the former head of the Civil Service has said.

Mr Case, who is the current head of the Civil Service, may be in line for criticism in the Sue Gray report.

Lord Kerslake told Times Radio: “I think he should shoulder his share of responsibility.

“It would be bizarre if Simon Case fell on his sword when he didn’t attend the parties and hasn’t been fined and the Prime Minister sails on when he did attend parties and was fined.

“For me it is not relevant how many fines he (Mr Johnson) had – the fact is there was a failure of leadership here.

“I think they are joined at the hip and I can’t see how one takes responsibility and the other doesn’t.”
