Sue Gray report latest: Sadiq Khan says Met Police must explain why Boris Johnson was not fined over Lee Cain party

The Metropolitan Police should explain why Boris Johnson was not fined for attending a leaving party in 10 Downing Street at a time when strict Covid restrictions were in place, Sadiq Khan has said. 

The Mayor of London said Scotland Yard should set out how conclusions were reached during the official police probe into the partygate scandal. 

He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: “Of course Sue Gray will publish her report this week and of course the Prime Minister will have to answer for himself. 

“But I think the police should explain why they reached their conclusions and provide that clarity.” 

Mr Khan’s intervention comes after the emergence of leaked photographs yesterday which showed the Prime Minister raising a toast with a group of colleagues. The pictures were taken at a leaving party for Lee Cain, Mr Johnsoon’s former director of communications, on November 13, 2020, when the country was in a second lockdown.

The photos prompted a furious backlash from the PM’s political opponents as Tory MPs also expressed concerns as Westminster waits for the Gray report to be published, potentially as soon as today.
