9 best reusable sanitary pads for a more sustainable period

[ad_1]

Finding a sanitary product that suits you and your needs is nothing short of life-changing, so if you’re struggling to get on with period pants or reusable applicator tampons, reusable sanitary pads could be the perfect solution. Reusable sanitary towels have been revolutionising the world of eco-friendly period products since they first went mainstream, providing a sustainable and cost-efficient alternative to their single-use counterparts which you’ve been relying on for so long.

Why are they needed? Well, not only do these reusable alternatives work out much cheaper-per-use, but the DAME suggests that switching to DAME reusable pads can save over 2,000 plastic disposables. Impressive, right? It’s easy to see how things stack up: WEN (Women’s Environmental Network) estimates that up to 90% of single-use menstrual pads contain plastic, and up to two billion period products are flushed down Britain’s toilets each year (as a result of the average person with periods using over 11,000 disposable, single-use menstrual products in their reproductive lifetime). It’s called period pollution, and investing in reusable sanitary pads is a good way to help. Here’s everything you need to know.

What are reusable sanitary pads made from?

Reusable sanitary pads are generally either made from either bamboo or cotton. Take the DAME reusable period pad set, for example. The core of these pads is made from a polyamide, polyester and lycra wicking layer that draws moisture away from your skin in seconds, while the top and bottom outer layers are made from super-soft natural fibres that stay comfortable against your skin (lyocell, organic cotton).

Cotton is a naturally breathable fabric and should be the preferred choice for those with a heavy flow (it’s slightly thicker than bamboo), while bamboo is durable, sustainable (it can grow to full size in just three or four months rather than over 30 years), and it has antibacterial qualities that can reduce the risk of infection.

How often do you change reusable sanitary pads?

It depends on the absorbency of the pad you go for, but the DAME Reusable Regular Pad absorbs the equivalent of 1 DAME Super tampon (9-12 grams) – so most people will be fine with a single change every eight-or-so hours. We found we didn’t need to change our reusable sanitary pad until around the eight-hour mark.

How do you clean reusable sanitary pads?

You can clean your reusable sanitary pads in the washing machine. Rinse your pad, then pop it in the wet bag provided with most variations, and wash with your normal cycle. It’s best to air dry the pads or tumble dry them on a low heat.

Do cloth menstrual pads smell?

No, they don’t. As with single-use period pads, most are crafted with odour-eliminating layers to keep you feeling dry and fresh. Need proof? The Cheeky Pants Bamboo Period Pads have four layers of protection to reduce any smells.

Are reusable sanitary pads good?

In short? Yes. Forget what you thought you knew: reusable sanitary towels aren’t smelly, gross or unhygienic. In fact, they tend to have a better absorbency than their single-use counterparts, built-in odour-eliminating layers and quick-drying properties. And if you need to change them throughout the day, most come with wet bags you can store your used pad in. Easy.
