Antonio Banderas has shared that one of the seemingly worst moments of his life actually turned out to be one of his best.

In an interview with Page Six promoting his latest film, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, he shares that the heart attack he suffered in 2017 was “definitive” for him.

“I realised that it probably was one of the best things that ever happened in my life because the things that were not important and I was worried every day about them – meaningless,” he shared.

The Spanish-born actor suffered from the heart attack in January 2017, and was saved by his longtime girlfriend Nicole Kimpel who reacted quickly and gave him medical assistance. He credits her for saving his life.

Though he had to undergo a procedure to insert three stents into his arteries, he still insists that it “hasn’t been as dramatic as some have written.”

“I was like, why am I worried about that if I’m going to die – I knew always, but now I know,” he emphasised by pointing downwards, “I’ve seen it right here,” he said, bringing his hand up to his face to show how close he was to death.

He shares that he only looks at the most important things now, such as, ‘My daughter” – 26-year-old Stella, who he shares with ex-wife, actress Melanie Griffith – as well as “my family, my friends, and my vocation, as an actor,” Banderas shared.

“I took a completely different path, I started [detaching] from things that were important before but were not really,” the 62-year-old shared his enlightened realisation.

He shares that his near-death experience helped him tune into his character as Puss in Boots.

In this iteration, Puss finds out that after eight lifetimes full of mischief and adventure, he is on his last and final ninth life. After this realisation, the feline undergoes a quest to find the mythical last wish.
