Argentine-American Broadcaster Andrés Cantor’s Calling the World Cup Win Is the Most Emotional Thing You’ll Ever Hear

The 2022 FIFA World Cup had no lack of controversy, but those of us willing to compartmentalize were treated to an unbelievable display on Sunday. Sure, sure, the game, between Argentina and France, showed remarkable athleticism, but let’s leave the field and go up to the booth for a minute.

Telemundo’s soccer announcer Andrés Cantor, born in Argentina, has been covering the event since 1990. That means he’s had to call losses in the finals for the land of his birth twice. But not this time.

After a game loaded with reversals, and then a second tie within extra time, the decision was ultimately made by penalty kicks. Some might call that anti-climactic, until Cantor made the call.

Already known for his exclamatory “GOOOOOOOOL!”s (which have been used in television commercials and even The Simpsons), emotion caught up with the 59-year-old broadcaster. Watch this now before the ogres at FIFA take it down.

Andrés Cantor was born in Buenos Aires in 1962. His mother came to the country at the age of 13 from Romania, and his father’s side were Jewish refugees who fled Nazi occupation in Poland. The family moved to California in the mid-1970s (his father was a teacher and physician, his mother had a psychology practice) but it was in Argentina where his love of the game was born. His famous “GOOOOOOOL!” calls made him a celebrity by the mid-1990s. David Letterman, who had him on The Late Show multiple times, was a particular fan.
