Ariana DeBose makes history as the first openly woman of color to win an acting Oscar
The first Oscar handed out at the 94th Academy Awards was a historic one, with Ariana DeBose winning Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story.
The 31-year-old actress became the first openly gay woman of color to win an acting Oscar, sending hope to the LGBTQ community in her heartfelt speech at the Dolby Theater.
DeBose beat out Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), Judi Dench (Belfast), Kirsten Dunst (The Power Of The Dog) and Aujanue Ellis (King Richard) for her first Oscar.

The actress took to the stage wearing a custom gown/tuxedo hybrid by Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino while dazzling in De Beers diamond jewellery to accept her first Oscar.
DeBose was clearly trying to process the big, win, beginning with, ‘Yikes. Okay. Oh, my word. What is this?’

‘You know what, now you see why Anita says I want to be in America, because even in this weary world that we live in, dreams do come true. And that’s really a heartening thing right now,’ she added.
‘If I took the time to say thank you to every single beautiful person who has lifted me up on the stage, you’ll find people would be sitting here until next Oscars, so I’m going to going to do that, but allow me to say it was the summer of a lifetime and I am the most privileged and grateful to have spent it with all of you,’ she continued.
She went on to thank her director, Steven Spielberg, adding, ‘My god, thank you, Steven Spielberg, you’re stuck with me,’ while also thanking screenwriter Tony Kushner, producer Kristie Macosko Krieger ‘and the divine inspiration that is Rita Moreno, you’re staring at me right now and I’m so grateful, you’re Anita paved the way for tons of Anitas like me. And I love you so much.’

She also thanked her, ‘tribesmen, my family, my loves, Sue, Jonathan, Anthony, I can’t do what I do without each and every one of you,’ before addressing her LGBTQ community.
‘Lastly, imagine this little girl in the back seat of a white Ford focus. Look into her eyes, you see an openly queer woman of color and Latina who found her strength in life through art. That’s what I believe we’re here to celebrate,’ she said to applause.
Family: She wrapped up her speech by thanking her family, including her mother, who was in attendance with her, adding, ‘I love you with my whole heart. This is as much yours as it is mine’
‘So to anybody who has ever questioned your identity, ever, ever, ever, or you find yourself living in the gray spaces, I promise you this: There is indeed a place for us. Thank you to the academy and thank you all,’ she concluded.
DeBose started her career on the stage and she made her television debut on So You Think You Can Dance in 2009, making the Top 20 that season.
She joined the ensemble of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s iconic musical Hamilton and starred in movies such as Seaside, A Smartphone User’s Guide to Etiquette and Prom, along with the TV series Schmigadoon.
She’ll next be seen in Argylle with Henry Cavill and Samuel L. Jackson, I.S.S. with Chris Messina and Kraven the Hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe.
