‘Barbie’ Trailer: Watch Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Live Life in Plastic

We’ve all seen the set photos—Margot Robbie in a bedazzled pink jumpsuit, Ryan Gosling a specimen in ‘80s-inspired neon spandex. But the time has finally come for the Barbie movie’s first teaser trailer—and let’s just say, it sparkles. 

“Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls,” a voice that sounds eerily like Helen Mirren’s (her account is one of only 15 the movie’s official Instagram follows) begins. “But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls, until…” Enter Robbie dressed as the first-ever iteration of Barbie, complete with strapless black-and-white one-piece and matching sunglasses. With a single wink to a group of nearby girls, baby dolls everywhere get tossed aside, then violently smashed. Barbie’s reign has begun. 

That’s not the only starry appearance in the footage from the film, which is directed by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) from a script she wrote with her real-life partner, Noah Baumbach. In quick flashes, Gosling’s Ken can be seen in a fringed leather vest alongside Kingsley Ben-Adir and Ncuti Gatwa. Issa Rae wears a pink sash that reads “President,” while Simu Liu sports an all-black outfit for what appears to be a dance number. 

“Making an obvious Barbie movie would’ve been extremely easy to do,” Robbie told Vanity Fair for her recent cover story, “and anything easy to do is probably not worth doing.” She later added, “People have got strong feelings. I’d much rather that than indifference. Now, let me subvert your expectations. It’s much scarier, but it’s also a great place to begin.”

Gerwig similarly spoke of disrupting the status quo when talking about the film with Dua Lipa (who also stars in the film) on her At Your Service podcast. “It felt like vertigo, starting to write it, like: ‘where do you even begin, and what would be the story?’” the Oscar nominee said of writing Barbie. “And I think it was that feeling I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually that’s where the best stuff is, where you’re like, ‘I am terrified of that.’ Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender’—then you’re like, ‘I should probably do it.’”

Barbie and her hot pink-drenched dream world debut in theaters on July 21, 2023.
