Box Office: Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam Could Lose Up To $100 Million

Warner Bros. could lose millions of dollars from the recent release of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

According to Variety, Black Adam stands to lose somewhere between $50 million to $100 million following a disappointing run at the worldwide box office. The movie marks the DC Universe debut of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam and also features the Justice Society of America, one of the most popular superhero teams.

Black Adam has so far earned $387 million at the worldwide box office against an estimated production budget of $195 million, with $100 million in marketing costs, though Warner Bros. insiders report that the advertisting costs are actually at $80 million due to COVID-related limitations. While Warner Bros. claims that Black Adam needs $400 million to break even thanks to streaming profits, Variety believes that the real figure is closer to $600 million.

Black Adam opened in North American theaters this past October, debuting to $67 million, a career-high for Dwayne Johnson. The movie performed better oveseas but didn’t manage to score a release in China, staying at the top of the box office until the opening weekend of Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Black Adam is the latest comic book-related project from Warner Bros. Discovery, which recently tapped James Gunn and Peter Safran to lead its DC Studios division. Their goal is to guide DC’s film, television and animation efforts over the next few years, creating an interconnected universe.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a script written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui and Pierce Brosnan.
