Catwoman Star Zoe Kravitz Praises Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ Script

Catwoman star Zoe Kravitz praised Matt Reeves’ script for The Batman and touched upon fan expectations.

One of the most inspired casting choices to come out of Matt Reeves’ The Batman has to be Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Kravitz has starred in a handful of successful indie productions but is most well-known for her Fantastic Beasts role. Kravitz joins The Batman alongside an all-star cast which includes Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, and Colin Farrell.

In a recent interview with AnotherMag, Zoe Kravitz was asked about fan expectations, especially surrounding a character as storied as Catwoman. The Batman star candidly discussed how she sidelined fan expectations so she could stick to Matt Reeves’ vision for Catwoman. The star continued by praising the story that Reeves crafted and compared the production to that of an independent film.

“They are, and because I respect them so much I chose not to think about them when making the movie. If I’m thinking about wanting everyone to like it and wanting all the fans to like it, I’m not going to actually bring a real person to life. Matt wrote a really interesting story with a complex character, and the relationships are really interesting. All I wanted to do was honour that story.”

“Sometimes with really big movies, it can feel like you’re just a puppet and part of this big machine. This felt like an independent movie in the way that there was real heart and soul and thought being put into the process and into every scene. It was incredibly collaborative. Matt’s very specific. It took him a year to make this because of Covid. We were in this bubble, really in this world, and it was an incredible experience. To spend a year of your life, and it’s very physically demanding … I had to be in very specific shape, and there’s a pandemic going on. I’m being zipped into a catsuit every day at 7am, working 12-hour days and then coming home and working out. It was intense.”

Kravitz’s take on the fandom is certainly appreciated, as well as her nuanced thoughts on Matt Reeves’ script. The star also recently discussed how she collaborated with the director to craft the role of Selina Kyle and even approached the character from the perspective of a woman, rather than an iconic comic book heroine.

The plot of The Batman is being kept under lock and key, but we know the film will follow Robert Pattinson as a younger version of Bruce Wayne, chronicling Batman during his second year as the Dark Knight of Gotham City. The film will also show off the hero using his skills as a detective more than what we’ve seen before in previous versions of the hero. It is also expected to be the first installment in a new trilogy of films with Pattinson.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.

The Batman will hit theaters on March 4, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
