Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson passed on a Shazam! Fury of the Gods appearance.

Heroic Hollywood’s Umberto Gonzalez has revealed that Dwayne Johnson turned down the opportunity to reprise his role as Black Adam in next year’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Black Adam and Shazam are archenemies in the pages of DC Comics, but the two have yet to share the screen in a live-action format.

Dwayne Johnson’s first cinematic solo outing as Black Adam has so far earned around $390 million at the worldwide box office, a rather disappointing figure for a project that was once expected to “change the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe.” The response to the film has also been mixed to negative, as it currently holds a 39 percent score on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.

Last night, DC Studios co-head James Gunn officially announced that he is writing the next Superman movie. Henry Cavill is no longer attached to the role of Superman despite his recent appearance in Black Adam, marking the end of his run as the Man of Steel.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are now in charge of DC’s film, television and animations efforts at Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing the company’s comic book-related assets under one roof. Gunn is said to be focusing on the creative direction of the DCU while Safran is handling things that are related to business and production.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
