HBO Max has axed Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler after three seasons.

Pennyworth, the origin story of Batman’s butler Alfred Pennyworth, was a television series produced by Epix and DC Entertainment. It eventually moved to the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max, which marketed it as Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler.

“While HBO Max is not moving forward with another season of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, we are very thankful to creator Bruno Heller and executive producers Matthew Patnick, Danny Cannon and John Stephens, along with Warner Bros. Television, for their brilliant, unique, gripping depiction of the origin of Alfred Pennyworth, one of the most iconic characters in the Batman world,” a spokesperson for HBO Max said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “An incredible blend of action, drama and humor, for three seasons, Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler has taken fans on a mind-bending ride into Alfred’s eccentric world and the beginnings of cutting-edge superheroes and supervillains.”

The cancellation of Pennyworth comes just a few days after the endings of Titans and Doom Patrol, two other popular DC Comics-based shows that aired on the DC Universe streaming service before making the jump to HBO Max. DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are gearing up to launch a new wave of DC Universe shows following the cancellations.

Could Pennyworth return?

Many fans of the show have expressed their disappointment and frustration at the Pennyworth cancellation, and have taken to social media to voice their support for the series and call for its revival. The hashtag #SavePennyworth is already making the rounds on social media platforms like Twitter, and fans have created online petitions calling for its return.

Despite its cancellation, Pennyworth has left a lasting impact on audiences and has helped to shed new light on the character of Alfred Pennyworth. The show was praised for its strong performances, especially Jack Bannon’s portrayal of Alfred.

Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler also starred Ben Aldridge, Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater and Simon Manyonda.
