James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is reviving the box office.

Avatar: The Way of Water made its long-awaited debut in theaters this past weekend, earning 134 million at the North American box office. The movie earned an additional $307.6 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $441.6 million.

The sequel to 2009’s Avatar, The Way of Water currently holds the second biggest global opening of the year behind Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which scored $442 million during the first weekend of May. The Way of Water is available in every international market except for Russia, where Hollywood releases are banned as a result of its invasion of Ukraine.

The Way of Water is rated PG-13 and runs for 3 hours and 12 minutes, making it about 30 minutes longer than the first entry in the Avatar series. The sequel is a hit with critics, as it holds a certified fresh ratting on the review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes. Its budget is somewhere between $350 million to $400 million.

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure” according to Disney’s official synopsis for the film.

Directed by James Cameron from a script he co-wrote with Josh Friedman, The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Winslet.
