Justice League Dark is once again dead.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that HBO Max is not moving forward with a live-action adaptation of the DC Comics title Justice League Dark. The series was being developed by J.J Abrams under his Bad Robot banner, which has a nine-figure film and television deal with HBO Max parent company WarnerMedia.

J.J. Abrams is a well-known producer and director who has worked on a number of high-profile projects, including the Star Trek reboot and the Star Wars sequel trilogy. When the Justice League Dark series was announced in 2020, DC Comics fans were excited to see what Abrams and his team would do with these supernatural characters. However, Justice League Dark is no longer happening following the DC Universe shakeup at Warner Bros. Discovery.

Justice League Dark is a DC Comics title that focuses on a group of supernatural heroes who protect the world from paranormal threats that the Justice League is not equipped to handle. The team includes characters such as John Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing and Deadman. It made its first appearance in the pages of 2011’s Justice League Dark #1 by Peter Milligan.

The future of the DC Universe

DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran recently told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DCU could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
