Kidman, the Kiss, and ‘Chicago:’ Recapping the 2003 Oscars

“You see people in the sky too, right?”

Carl says she heard a story that when Zellweger was little, her brother would “shame her into silence” every time she sang. “Aw, no, that was just his job. That’s a big brother’s job, to put you in your place,” Zellweger says, for some reason not wanting to revisit old family strife on the Oscars red carpet while tanks are barreling toward Baghdad.

“You could have just asked if I like deep-dish pizza or something.”

And that’s the end of the interview! These segments are really short this year, out of respect for Iraqi civilians, I’m assuming. “Enjoy the night,” Carl says to Zellweger. “It’s your night.” Which, of course, it wasn’t. Though Zellweger had won the SAG award a few weeks prior, she would eventually lose out to Nicole Kidman, who had picked up the BAFTA on her way to the Oscar stage. (Both actors won at the Globes.) Should Zellweger have won? I think that’s a question only her brother can answer.

Then it’s back to Robinson, who offers us a look at the five performers nominated for best actress, including a clip of each woman in action.
