‘Less Than Half’ of the DCU’s Projects Have Been Revealed, James Gunn Says

Back in late January, during a presentation at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed ten film and television projects that are currently in the works at DC Studios.

The two only mentioned the release dates of the next Superman movie and Robert Pattinson’s Batman sequel, the latter of which is set outside of the DC Universe and not part of the main slate, but a list of the projects can be found below. The titles are subject to change ahead of their start date.

The first chapter of the DC Universe is called “Gods and Monsters,” according to the two DC Studios heads. Drew Goddard, Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Christal Henry and Tom King are part of the DCU creative team. Fans of the DC Universe should recognize the title as it was also used as a subtitle for an animated Justice League movie directed by Sam Liu.

“DC Studios is unprecedented,” Peter Safran said during the presentation, which lasted about 55 minutes. “It is a standalone, production entity and studio. It is the first time ever that everything DC related film, television, live action, animation and gaming is all centralized under one creative vision, that of James and myself.”

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.

Creature Commandos will be released sometime in 2024 while Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
