Mitch McConnell One Day Away From Saying He’d Back Mussolini for President If The Italian Dictator Won the GOP Nomination

[ad_1]

Like many Americans, Mitch McConnell has an extremely long list of reasons to refuse to support Donald Trump’s bid for a second term in the White House, regardless of whether or not the ex-president wins the GOP nomination in 2024. These reasons include but are in no way limited to:

  • Trump’s incitement of a violent insurrection because he lost the 2020 election, which McConnell has described as “a disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty,” saying, “There’s no question—none—that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day”
  • Trump’s yearslong attempt to oust McConnell from power
  • Trump’s description of McConnell as “a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack” lacking in “political insight, wisdom, skill, and personality”
  • Trump‘s repeated description of McConnell as “an old broken-down crow
  • Trump’s declaration that McConnell is a “piece of shit” (Full quote: “The Old Crow’s a piece of shit.”)
  • Trump calling McConnell’s wife, former Transportation secretary Elaine Chao, crazy
  • Trump’s racist attacks on Chao which have included writing, “Does Coco Chow have anything to do with Joe Biden’s Classified Documents being sent and stored in Chinatown?” and describing Chao as McConnell’s “China-loving wife.”

For most people, the aforementioned would be enough to never want to be in a room with Trump again and, more likely, try very hard to ensure the guy’s political career is over. But for McConnell? Not so much!

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the lawmaker from Kentucky was asked, “In light of Nikki Haley’s decision to jump into the race today, do you that think it’s time for this party to find a fresh face and move away from Donald Trump?” To which McConnell responded: “Well, what I think we’re going to have is a vigorous primary with a number of candidates making their case and the American people, those who are registered Republicans, who are going to participate in these primaries, are going to decide who they want to nominate. And I think it’s going to be very, very competitive, in these primaries and we’ll hope for the best. And obviously I’m going to support whoever the nominee ultimately is.”
