[ad_1]

Some of the best co-op games on the market are actually available on mobile platforms, whether it’s major studios that have adapted their console properties to the medium, or indie developers who are using mobile as an opportunity to grow.

The best thing about many of these cooperative games is that anyone can connect with one another across the world. Many of these titles do not require playing directly with friends, although they can lead to new friendships. Some could be deemed to be guilty pleasure video games, but regardless of their status, they are still so entertaining and push players in regard to their skills and title tactics.

Rocket League Sideswipe from Psyonix is the perfect game for randomly assigned competition and takes the basic premise of the original Rocket League and transports it to mobile platforms, with a few control changes. While, graphically, it isn’t quite as advanced, the gameplay is just as entertaining and fast-paced, with the gravity-defying vehicles competing in an all-out soccer battle.

The developers have paid a lot of attention to the details that made the first game so popular, with some of the best Rocket League cars available in this format. Online play is a part of that co-op selling point, with players able to compete against one another and even partner to attempt to move their way up the leaderboard.

The usual Mario Kart formula from Nintendo is found on its traditional platforms and although those consoles have mastered the racing experience, Mario Kart Tour has brought some great tracks into play on mobile, alongside the ability to take the game anywhere players want. It’s a brilliant small-scale reimagining from BANDAI NAMCO.

While there might be some harsh realities to discover when replaying old Mario Kart games, it’s fair to say that Mario Kart Tour does not disappoint in living up to the main iteration. The co-op is just like Mario Kart itself, with players racing against one another and in group modes, with a few other exciting features thrown in to aid in that fan connectivity.

BombSquad is simply constructed but so addictive to play with friends. The explosive game is an arcade-style party release, which offers several different cooperative options, many of which work best if playing in person with one another.

Some of the best mobile games of the year are so imaginative in their layout and design, and BombSquad is no different. Fortnite is a massive battle royale game which players have come to appreciate for its imaginative modifications, consistent updates, narrative charm, and humorous combat scenarios. Bringing Fortnite to mobile was never going to be easy, but all the trademarks of the franchise are still present among Fortnite Battle Royale from Epic Games.

As one of the best free-to-play games in its usual medium, Fortnite has organically fit into the mobile market with ease because of the co-op element. The controls are not as complex and cross-play has been a notable addition to create a sense of continuity. Fortnite is all about fighting against one another and uneasy alliances, elements that excel even on a platform often utilized while on the go.

5 Among Us (2018)

Among Us is so addictive because it feels different every time it’s played. With someone getting chosen as the Imposter, looking to kill off all the allies getting on with menial tasks, the InnerSloth LLC title has the capability of allowing friends to play alongside one another in private rooms, or to join a public setting with an open match style.

There are those that have argued that Among Us is an overrated game but when looking at other co-op titles, there are very few that can immediately be so investing. Each match is fast-paced and short, after all, meaning that anyone can jump in at any point and join a contest, perhaps even taking on the responsibility of becoming an imposter along the way. The detective element really sets it apart.

Pokémon GO from Niantic is lucky in that it already has a beloved franchise to build on. While other titles might have tried to take all of the features from the console games and made them work for mobile platforms, Pokémon GO was innovative in its approach, especially when it came to the use of augmented reality. Its co-op additions complimented this.

From massive battles to even Legendary encounters which can lead to the capture of some of the hardest Pokémon in the title, there are so many ways to interact with others. Gym Battles, trading, and passing information to each other about where to get the best Pokémon, are all instances of unique cooperation in action. The fact that GO can now crossover with mainline games lets that hard work pay off.

3 Minecraft (2011)

Minecraft was transported to mobile by Mojang Studios and picks up exactly where the title left off. It’s obvious that one of the most notable inclusions is the ability to create and compare online, and that continues here. There are other Minecraft mobile games available that focus on survival for instance, but the classic variation isn’t without merit.

There are certain features that have become mainstays on PC, such as the range of Minecraft mods available, which still interact with the mobile iteration. But this is a game that has been layered back slightly, to focus on those building and survival elements that can help connect players, with cooperation becoming a focal point of that gameplay style.

Players are tasked with building towers, making sure they don’t fall over, and trying to control the territory on the map. The mobile version is just as beautifully designed and is so intuitive in the way its controls have been set out, which makes it easily accessible for all.

The appeal of video games based on board games is rather obvious. The idea that not everyone has to be in the room at the same time to play makes it more accessible. That cooperative element is only enhanced through online play, with Santorini Board Game working perfectly as a game to play with strangers, without direct communication needed.

1 Words With Friends (2009)

An image of words spelt out in Words With Friends

Words With Friends isn’t dissimilar to games like Scrabble. Those leaping into the fray are designated numerous letters, which they can make words with across the board. It’s incredibly interactive and versatile, but the simplicity of the approach to the title has allowed it to spread rapidly, with friends finding a way to bond over the brain training exercise.

Of course, Words With Friends hasn’t completely cornered the market, with other spelling and word games like Wordlecontinuing to dominate discussions in the medium. Yet, it’s that selling point of playing together with a friend that makes this such a brilliant co-op title, with competitors oftentimes working together to get the best scores possible for a satisfying filling of the board.
