While Gotham Knights clearly didn’t live up to fan expectations, gamers are already looking ahead to the next DC video game to come out, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. DC fans everywhere are praying that this widely anticipated game will be a worthy successor previous games that have taken place in the Batman Arkham universe.

DC Comics has created numerous games throughout the past few decades, and while some have been lost to time, there are many games that have easily made a name for themselves. But some games are better than others, and these are the 10 DC games that have gotten the highest scores from Metacritic.

Lego DC Super-Villains (76)

Most Lego games based on superhero comics focus on controlling the heroes, but Lego DC Super-Villains uniquely changes this trope by letting players play as the villains for most of the campaign.

Loosely adapting from the Forever Evil storyline from DC Comics, the game follows the villains of the DC universe as they band together to defeat the Crime Syndicate when they eliminate the Justice League. Its combination of epic DC combat and the classic comedic LEGO game style certainly struck the right chord for gamers.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (76)

Though not the toughest fighting game to master, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe still left its mark as a great installment to both franchises, albeit underrated. After Darkseid and Shao Khan merged, their respective universes also merged, leading to battles between both worlds as they try to figure out who is responsible. While it acts like any other fighting game normally would, being able to blend both the Mortal Kombat and the DC universes together was well done in the eyes of many, and would eventually lead to the creation of the Injustice franchise for DC.

Batman: The Enemy Within (79)

Batman: The Telltale Series contains one of the best video game versions of Gotham City, something that continues in the sequel, Batman: The Enemy Within. In this game, Batman must battle villains once again, including the mysterious Pact and the rise of his greatest nemesis, the Joker. Not only did this game seem a step above its predecessor in terms of quality, but the game also continued the trend of showing gamers just how difficult making the choices Batman makes is, as many choices the player makes in the game could lead to even more dire consequences in the end.

Lego Batman: The Videogame (80)

While it turned out to be a simple and easy game, Lego Batman: The Videogame still is one of the greatest Lego games out there and kicked off the Lego Batman series. The game is divided into three separate campaigns as Batman and Robin chase down Gotham’s deadliest and worst criminals. The gameplay mechanics are simple and easy to understand, making the game a great hit for younger gamers, and, of course, the classic Lego comedy is prevalent throughout. Even at its old age, this game still has a special and nostalgic place in the hearts of many gamers.

Injustice: Gods Among Us (80)

The game that would launch one of the darkest storylines in DC history, Injustice: Gods Among Us showed the world what happens when DC’s greatest hero turns into a villain.

In the world of Injustice, Superman turns into a brutal dictator after the Joker tricks him into accidentally killing Lois and her unborn child. With the Justice League backing him up, only Batman stands against him. The game was a smash hit upon release as gamers discovered that even Superman could wind up going bad given the wrong circumstances.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (81)

The Lego Batman games are some of the best Lego games for beginners, and Lego Batman 2 is no exception to that. As a sequel to the first game of the franchise, Lego Batman 2 adds more DC superheroes to the game, such as Superman and the rest of the Justice League, and pits them against the alliance of Lex Luthor and the Joker. As usual, Lego makes this game as fun and comedic as possible, and it also holds the distinction of being the first Lego game to feature spoken dialogue rather than the usual grunts from previous games.

Batman: Arkham Knight (87)

While disappointing for some, there’s no denying that Batman: Arkham Knight is one of the best Batman video games out there and a worthy conclusion to the Arkham trilogy. In this game, which takes place after the death of the Joker in the previous installment, Batman must stop Scarecrow’s plan in taking over Gotham while dealing with a new nemesis, the Arkham Knight. The game is filled with twists and turns and a drivable Batmobile that got everyone excited. And while the big reveal on the identity of the Arkham Knight was underwhelming for many, the overall tone and plot of the game still made the game both highly enjoyable and highly replayable.

Injustice 2 (88)

With the success of the first Injustice game, it came as no surprise that Injustice 2 would not only happen, but would be even better than the original game.

After Braniac attacks Earth, Batman is forced to work together with the remaining members of the Regime, including Superman, to save the world. While not as dark and foreboding as the previous installment, the game still brings the usual Injustice feel, brings out redemption arcs for some of the former Regime members, and shows that some heroes are too far gone to return to the side of good.

Batman: Arkham Asylum (92)

The game that started it all, Batman: Arkham Asylum instantly proved itself to be a huge hit and the start of what many consider to be the greatest Batman game series ever. Set entirely at Arkham Asylum, the game follows Batman as he battles his various villains and tries to stop Joker and his takeover of the Asylum. Filled with difficult boss fights, amazing vocal performances from Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, and even a few puzzles to solve in game, it’s no surprise why this game ranks among the best that DC has to offer.

Batman: Arkham City (96)

The second game in a franchise is usually a toss-up on its quality, but Batman: Arkham City proved not only to be the perfect follow-up to Arkham Asylum, but also one of the best DC games overall. Years after the events of the previous game, Batman must infiltrate Arkham City, the replacement for Arkham Asylum, and stop the latest plots from his villains. Not only did the game have an exceptional plot and easy mechanics to understand, but its ending still remains as one of the most shocking endings in video game history, especially with the death of a character no one saw coming.
