The Town is a gripping crime thriller that stars Affleck as the head of a gang of bank robbers who pull off slick heists in Boston. However, with the FBI on their trail, Affleck’s criminal protagonist risks everything by falling for a bank teller from their latest robbery. Affleck proves himself a talented director of action sequences with some genuinely thrilling set pieces. It also features a tremendous cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Michael Shannon.

Following John Travolta’s comeback in Pulp Fiction, the actor became a 90s action star and one of the era’s most underrated movies is on Hulu this month. Broken Arrow stars Travolta as a military pilot who goes rogue and steals a nuclear weapon with the plan to hold the United States hostage. It is then up to his former partner (Christian Slater) to stop his villainous plan. Directed by Hong Kong action legend John Woo, Broken Arrow is a stylized and wild ride with some fantastic set pieces. It also features a great villain performance from Travolta who seems to be having a blast in the role.

L.A. Confidential (1997)

Fans of the noir genre will be happy to find the twist-filled L.A. Confidential among the best movies on Hulu this month. Based on the novel by James Ellroy, the movie takes place in the 1940s, following three Los Angeles detectives who find themselves intertwined in a criminal conspiracy that reaches from the glamor of Hollywood to the most corrupt corners of the city’s police department. Featuring a strong cast led by Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, and Guy Pearce, the movie feels like a throwback homage to the likes of Chinatown with an ensemble of flawed heroes and a polished 1950s period vibe.

Both Nicholson and Hunt won Oscars for their roles and they offer just a little bit of what makes this comedy worth watching.
