Luther: The Fallen Sun (2023)

One of the best movies on Netflix this month will see Idris Elba returning to one of his most popular roles. Luther was a gritty crime series that ran for five seasons from 2010 to 2019, following Elba as DCI John Luther, a brilliant police investigator who is not above bending the law to take down the suspects he knows are guilty. Luther: The Fallen Sun is the first cinematic outing for Luther and follows the end of season 5 in which Luther found himself heading to prison. The movie will see him back on the streets and looking to take down a new villain (played by Andy Serkis) who is responsible for a series of brutal murders.

Murder Mystery 2 (2023)

While the along with being some of the best movies on Netflix the Knives Out movies inspired the Murder Mystery franchise. With a reunion of superstars Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler coming back for the sequel, it is hard to revisit. Murder Mystery 2 will pick up with Nick and Audrey struggling to get their private eye business off the ground when they find themselves caught up in another serious caper while at a wedding for their friend. Aniston and Sandler make for a charming duo in any movie and seeing them in the middle of a whodunnit is very promising. They are also joined by new cast members like Mark Strong, Jodie-Turner-Smith, and Inglourious Basterds’ Melanie Laurent.

Riddick (2013)

With news that Vin Diesel will return to his character Riddick in an all-new movie, fans might want to look back on the third and most recent installment in the franchise. Riddick finds the Furian warrior left for dead on a hostile planet, Riddick must team up with a band of mercenaries hunting him in order to survive. The Riddick trilogy never took off in the way that Diesel wanted, but this third movie wisely simplifies things and makes for a fun sci-fi action thriller. It also features a fun supporting cast behind Diesel, including The Mandalorian‘s Katee Sackhoff and Diesel’s future Guardians of the Galaxy co-star Dave Bautista.

The Magician’s Elephant (2023)

While not competing with the likes of Disney and Pixar, Netflix’s 2022 movie Sea Beast proved they had some amazing animated movies for the whole family. One such movie premiering as a Netflix original in March is The Magician’s Elephant, based on the book by Kate DiCamillo. The story follows a young boy who is searching for his lost sister which takes him to a fortune-teller. From there, he is told to seek out an elephant which will point him in the direction of his sibling. The animated adventure looks to be a magical and heartwarming tale while featuring a talented voice cast, including Brian Tyree Henry and Benedict Wong as the magician.

Magic Mike XXL (2015)

To coincide with the release of Magic Mike’s Last Dance, Netflix is adding the best Magic Mike movie of the trilogy. Magic Mike XXL took the exciting and beloved characters of the original movie and infused it with a fun energy that was missing from the first movie. Channing Tatum returns as Mike who, after stepping away from the stripper game, returns with his fellow performers to put on one last blow-out performance in Myrtle Beach. The movie is a funny and wild road trip movie that also features a wonderful supporting cast that includes, Donald Glover, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Elizabeth Banks.

World War Z (2013)

Based on the acclaimed novel by Max Brooks, World War Z is an intense zombie thriller on a global scale. While fans are still waiting for updates on World War Z 2, they can revisit this fast-paced horror movie starring Brad Pitt as a United Nations employee who is sent across the globe when a zombie outbreak threatens all of existence. As he searches for a cure, he sees the threat spreading while remaining one step ahead of it and trying to return to his family. The movie might not please die-hard fans of the novel, but it is an exciting and big-budget zombie romp with a solid lead performance from Pitt.

Fans looking for a laugh can join Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis in the R-rated comedy, The Hangover. It is easy to forget that before Todd Phillips put his twist on comic book movies with Joker, he was known for these types of raunchy comedies. The movie follows a group of friends on a bachelor party weekend in Las Vegas. After a night of partying, they wake up with no memory of the previous night and no idea where the groom-to-be is. While The Hangover franchise notably went downhill after this, the first movie can still deliver big laughs with the fun trio of stars and the clever concept.

Sleepless In Seattle (1993)

March could be the perfect time for fans to cuddle up with their special someone to enjoy a classic rom-com. Netflix is adding one of the best in the genre with Sleepless in Seattle. The Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan collaboration follows a young newly engaged woman (Ryan) who hears a story about a widowed father (Hanks) on the radio and finds herself falling in love with this man who she never met. It speaks to the charm of the two leads that these main characters hardly share any screen time and yet it’s so easy to root for them to get together in the end. It is a funny and sweet comedy perfect for a bit of lighthearted viewing.

Rango (2011)

The unique animated adventure Rango is a surreal, funny, and entertaining ride with a heavy Spaghetti Western influence. The movie follows a timid and anxious chameleon named Rango who stumbles onto a tough Western town filled with dangerous animals. When he is mistaken for a fearless hero, he becomes seen as the salvation of the small town. The Western vibe of the movie is very fun with Western icon Clint Eastwood even appearing as a character in the movie (voiced by modern Western icon Timothy Olyphant). It is a strange yet exciting animated movie worth checking out.

Stone plays Olive, a clean-cut high schooler who, after doing a favor for an outcast classmate, becomes the subject of rumors and gossip that change how everyone sees her. It is a high school update of The Scarlett Letter with some interesting and clever commentary on high school culture. However, the movie’s real highlight is Stone’s lead performance, she shows terrific comedic timing that works with the movie’s sharp humor while also bringing a strong performance to the more dramatic moments, showing the talents that would later win her an Oscar.
