1899 actor Gabby Wong has shared a hilarious story in an interview with Metro about her reaction upon reading the ending of 1899 season 1. Wong was part of 1899‘s expansive cast, yet she was still completely stunned by how the show concluded. Check out her full quote below:

1899 Ending Explained

Just as its spiritual sibling show Dark did over the course of three seasons, Netflix’s 1899 left fans in turmoil following the show’s season 1 ending. 1899 presented a slow-burn story that brought fans onboard a sprawling saga that started with the disappearance of a ship called the Prometheus under mysterious circumstances. The show chose to focus on a diverse cast of actors, which included characters from a wide range of countries, such as the young ill-fated Ada and ostensible protagonist Maura. Many spoke different languages, leading to great confusion from the characters as they tried to work together to solve the ship’s puzzles.

The decision to set the show into a Bermuda Triangle-like setting was a perfect one, as it provided the series with the necessary eerie tone that kept things claustrophobic from the start, creating an engrossing atmosphere for fans and starting 1899‘s story with a healthy dose of horror. Such great set up provided season 1’s finale with its gravitas. 1899‘s ending saw protagonist Maura find out that everyone was trapped in a simulation that recreated a trip on the Kerberos ship, and that she was its creator. The show reveals that Maura created the simulation for her son Elliot after his health started declining due to a mysterious disease. Maura chose to transfer her son’s mind to a simulated reality where she and husband Daniel could spend time with him in a small playroom, forgetting his real world outcome.

The 1899 season finale also answered another great question, revealing who was controlling the currently ongoing simulation. The finale saw Maura wake up from her own simulation in a space station named Project Prometheus in the year 2099, discovering that all passengers on the Kerberos are present on the spaceship as it floats through outer space. 1899‘s ending suggests one of two things: Either Maura has broken out of the simulation fully, or she’s just awakened into a new simulation that she’ll need to escape during season 2 in order to get to the real world. One thing that was confirmed during Maura’s discovery of the Prometheus spaceship twist was that her brother Cirian was behind everyone’s current imprisonment and possibly is the only person to know what is the real world. Maura will certainly delve deeper into her brother’s machinations whenever 1899 season 2 comes around.
