In an interview with Metro, Wong reveals her theory on what the season’s final twist and the final scene could mean for 1899‘s future. She provides an interesting theory on the importance of the characters in the final scene. Of course, 1899‘s creators are just as elusive with her as they are with fans, so she isn’t certain about 1899‘s big picture. Check out her statement below:

I don’t know if it’s that wild a theory, but every single person that you see in the final scene is there for a reason. Even though you might not have gotten any answers or any elaborate elaboration of it in season 1, every single person in that room is there for a reason.

How 1899 Season 2 Could Be Even Wilder Than Season 1

Speculation about 1899 season 2 has been high given that season 1 ended with such a drastic twist. In the season finale, it is revealed that the immigrants on the steamboat are actually not on a boat, but a stimulation. In reality, they are actually on board a Spaceship called Prometheus in the year 2099 and are in suspended animation. The 1899 season 1 finale ends with one passenger, Maura (Emily Beecham), awakening and discovering the simulation. Of course, when she awakens she spots several of her fellow passengers in animated suspension. While it might seem that these passengers were randomly chosen, Wong’s theory suggests all of them are there for a specific reason. Whether said reason is good or bad remains to be seen, but it could lead to new revelations about the entire cast of characters. It also leaves several questions about who is behind the simulation and what part the passengers played in entering it.

Based on the cliffhanger ending, 1899 season 2 could go in any direction it wanted to. One of the major ways the show can capitalize on the ending and make season 2 even wilder is by confusing the characters and audiences about what is real and what is not. Even though Maura seemingly broke the simulation she was in, there’s a possibility that the Prometheus spaceship is yet another simulation that she and her fellow passengers will have to navigate.

Essentially, 1899 could put the characters into a never-ending loop of simulations, keeping everyone on their toes about what the actual reality is. If Prometheus is yet another simulation, it adds to the urgency of the question of what reality is. It also questions if audiences can even trust the year 2099, or if that is just another piece of the simulation. Things could get even wonkier in 1899 season 2 if it probes whether the characters themselves are even real. The internet has been ablaze with theories, especially about Elliot (Fflyn Edwards), Daniel (Aneurin Barnard), and Maura, and whether they are real people, codes in a simulation, or even AIs. Now that 1899 season 1 revealed the twist, season 2 could be even wilder as it toys with viewers’ minds and makes them constantly question what is real and what isn’t.
