1923’s Jack and Elizabeth could be the next Jacob and Cara, teases star Darren Mann, who discusses his character’s development during season 1.

Darren Mann teases that Jack and Elizabeth could be the next Jacob and Cara following the 1923 season 1 finale. The series, a prequel to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, premiered back in December, tracking the Dutton family amid a period of adversity brought on by the early 20th century. While every romantic relationship has been tested over the course of season 1, Jack and Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph), in particular, have endured a lot.

From the challenge of their wedding to the deaths of loved ones, including their unborn child, Jack and Elizabeth still remain close heading into 1923 season 2. During a recent interview with Insider, Mann discussed his character’s development and noted that he and Elizabeth may end up resembling Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Helen Mirren) in the future of the Yellowstone prequel. Maybe Jack and Elizabeth are going to become like the new Jacob and Cara… He and Elizabeth, they love the Yellowstone more than anybody. He loves being a cowboy, he loves taking care of his family and you know, he doesn’t want to let that go and he’ll do anything he can to protect that.

How Jack & Elizabeth’s Relationship Evolved During 1923 Season 1

When 1923 first premiered, the potential troubles facing Jack and Elizabeth were not apparent, as the couple’s biggest concern revolved around their marriage. A minor source of contention, when Jack joined the cattle drive in the first episode, he had to delay their wedding. After the attack by Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) and his men, Elizabeth decided to stay with the Duttons on their ranch, despite having been wounded, and Jack’s father, John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale), left dying.

As the Yellowstone prequel series continued, the pair recited their vows, just between themselves, and Elizabeth announced that she was pregnant, though she unfortunately suffered a miscarriage in the 1923 season 1 finale. Afterward, they shared an emotional moment together, during which Jack comforted her as she admitted to feeling defeated. He expressed his love to Elizabeth and talked about admiring Cara for how she took care of everyone when she did not have children of her own.

Jack’s comments about his great aunt suggest that he and Elizabeth might not have kids, leading to questions surrounding the identity of John Dutton III’s (Kevin Costner) grandparents. Another pregnancy can happen though, and if Jack inherits the ranch, it is possible that the two of them could end up being the next Jacob and Cara. With 1923 season 2 on the way, it will be interesting to see what Jack and Elizabeth face next and if Mann’s idea for their future begins to take shape.
