Big Brother: The First 10 Seasons, Ranked By IMDb Score

[ad_1]

With Big Brother’s long history, it is interesting to look back at how the first 10 seasons of the show compare to each other, according to their IMDb scores. The first 10 seasons of Big Brother feel like a different show when one watches them back, especially the earliest ones. All the components of modern Big Brother are there, but the look and strategy make all these older seasons seem very foreign. Without a doubt, Big Brother would not be the show it is today without these first 10 seasons.

Some seasons are always going to be more well-received than others, as that is just the nature of television. Some Big Brother fans respond well to certain twists they implement, while others are deemed as poor and are hoped to never be used again. Casting also plays a massive part since, if the houseguests are not entertaining, then the whole season would be a bore. The average IMDb score of every season’s episodes was calculated are used to determine which seasons viewers like the most.

10 Big Brother 1 – 5.66

The very first season of Big Brother, appropriately titled Big Brother 1, premiered in July 2000. This season has the most episodes by far with its 70 episodes averaging a score of 5.66. This season is a completely different game than the one that is on today, as exemplified by the intro from Survivor Fan’s YouTube channel.

New fans of the show today would not recognize Big Brother 1. There was no HOH or veto competition, but instead, there were weekly challenges that would determine different factors during the week, like how much grocery money the houseguests received. This season suffers from the over-saturation of episodes. When there are 70 episodes to a season, the reviews are bound to a plateau to a mediocre score. It was nice, however, to see Chicken George play in Big Brother 7.

9 Big Brother 9 – 6.62

Big Brother 9 is a caveat in the series’ history, as it premiered in the winter of 2008. This season’s episodes average an IMDb score of 6.62. Season 9 sticks out like a sore thumb in Big Brother’s catalog.

Big Brother 9 has many faults to it. One big reason why this season was rated lower is the fact that it was played in the wintertime. It did not have the same exciting, summer energy that every other season has. It was wet and rainy and just felt darker. Also, there was a twist where the houseguests played in pairs. It was a weird twist that only lasted a few weeks, so its impact on the game felt pointless.

8 Big Brother 3 – 6.87

Big Brother 3 premiered in July 2002. This season’s episodes average a score of 6.87 on IMDb. This is a historic season, as it made one giant step to becoming the game that is on television today.

This was the first season the veto was introduced. It was a different kind of veto, with different rules, but added a new twist to the game. Due to the inexperience with the power of veto, it resulted in one of the craziestveto ceremonies in Big Brother history. Also, Danielle’s gameplay this season was historic, and still discussed as one of the best houseguests in history to never win to this day.

7 Big Brother 2 – 7.06

Big Brother 2 premiered in July 2001. This season’s episodes are the first to average above a seven, as their IMDb scores average 7.06. This is the first season with the format that viewers are familiar with today.

This season was the first to implement the HOH format and their nominations of two houseguests per week. Even without the power of veto in place, Big Brother 2 was still one of the more dramatic seasons. This season saw the birth of The Chilltown alliance and saw Will play an awesome game of Big Brotherwhen he really had no one to model it after. Will and Boogie started one of the most dominant alliances ever, as they both went on to win a season.

Big Brother 5 premiered in July 2004. Their episodes average a score of 7.15 on IMDb. This season’s higher reviews can be attributed to its overall theme, as well as some iconic moments.

This summer’s ‘Do Not Assume’ twist was very memorable, as it revealed that two houseguests were half-siblings, as well as introducing the world to the Twin Twist. This saw two identical twins switching places in the house and playing as one player for the first few weeks. Big Brother 5’s entertaining 6 Finger Plan alliance also changed the game’s format. This plan eventually helped Big Brother randomly pick who competed in the veto competition instead of the houseguests picking themselves.

5 Big Brother 8 – 7.19

Big Brother 8 premiered in July 2007. This season’s episodes average a score of 7.19 on IMDb. This season had large shoes to fill coming after an all-stars season, and it delivered in a lot of ways.

The America’s Player twist turned out to be a great addition to the season, as Eric was a lovable player who was easy to root for. It was interesting to see viewers have such a direct impact on the game, which probably caused some positive reviews. The big twist this season saw three houseguests’ rivals enter the house. This stirred up a lot of drama for the whole summer as Evil Dick’s famous temper tantrums are famous in Big Brother lore.

Big Brother 6 premiered in July 2005. This season’s episodes average a score of 7.44 on IMDb. This season had a pretty intriguing twist, as well as a split house, which caused lots of mayhem.

This season’s good reviews could stem from the fact that every houseguest entered the game with a secret partner that they knew from the outside world. This new, interesting wrinkle made the game even more dynamic than it was before. Also, the Friendship and Sovereign 6 alliances were battling back and forth all summer, causing one of the most entertaining power struggles that have ever occurred on Big Brother. It is also cool to see Big Brother legend Janelle’s first appearance on the show, as she went on to play three more times.

3 Big Brother 10 – 7.57

Big Brother 10 debuted in July 2008. This season’s episodes average 7.57 on IMDb. This season is in the upper echelon of Big Brother seasons, largely in part to its cast and how cohesive they were.

This season had a perfect cast. Everyone was unique and brought a different personality to the show. These personalities also clashed with each other in almost every episode, and this season even had the most memorable fight in Big Brother history, which was Keesha’s Birthday. This season is also remembered fondly because of Dan’s historic Big Brother gameplay. He played like no one had before, as he acted like he was super weak and had this pathetic persona for most of the season to appear non-threatening. Other houseguests even started to suspect he was America’s Player because he was playing so well.

Big Brother 7 first aired in July 2006. This season’s episode average is just under an eight, as it sits at 7.96. This was the first installment of Big Brother All-Stars, so there was a massive expectation and this season delivered.

It was very amusing to see all the high-profile houseguests from the seasons prior battle it out together. Even though the pre-jury started a bit slow, the jury phase of Big Brother 7 was intense. Will and Boogie worked together again, but this time with Danielle from season 3, which was such a pleasure to watch since the three of them think about the game so differently. Also, Janelle set the record for most competition wins this season, so she was at the top of her game as well.

1 Big Brother 4 – 8.65

Big Brother 4 first aired in July 2003. This season’s episodes have the highest average score with an impressive 8.65. This season was the first one to implement a big, season-long twist involving the cast.

The ‘X-Factor’ twist saw exes of 5 of the 8 houseguests enter the house and become players. This was the first time Big Brother made a casting choice like this in its history. The pre-established drama from all the prior relationships made this season very entertaining, and also gave Big Brotherthe confidence to try other twists. Jun and Alison’s game plan of sneakily floating throughout the game established a new strategy that would be used in later seasons by numerous contestants.
