Bob Odenkirk’s 10 Best Movies, Ranked According To Letterboxd

Better Call Saul has now come to an end following a six-season run, leaving behind powerful performances from its insanely talented cast, most notably lead actor Bob Odenkirk. Odenkirk has received five Emmy nominations for his role as the titular Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill.



Odenkirk, before taking on the more dramatic roles from Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, was mostly known for comedy thanks to shows like Mr. Show and Saturday Night Live. His filmography is highly diverse, the users of Letterboxd ranked his best feature-length films.

10 The Post (2017) – 3.4

In this Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep-led political thriller directed by Steven Spielberg, The Post follows the real-life journalists of The Washington Post as they go up against the Nixon Administration and publish documents surrounding the Vietnam War. Odenkirk plays Ben Bagdikian, the assistant managing editor who persuades the team to publish the papers without federal consent.

While typically more of a comedic actor, Odenkirk’s role in the film works in favor of the film’s emphasis on the importance of freedom of expression. Still, Odenkirk adds light with his charm and humor that he brings to the drama of the film, similarly to Saul Goodman’s role in Breaking Bad.

9 I Am Chris Farley (2015) – 3.5

This deeply moving documentary chronicles the life and career of one of SNL’s greatest cast members, the late Chris Farley, told through interviews by his friends and family. Bob Odenkirk appears as an interviewee and describes how he and Farley workshopped the famous Matt Foley sketches that later became one of SNL’s most beloved skits, describing the experience as the best moment of his career.

The documentary received good reviews for giving an insight into Farley’s life through the ones that knew him best. As soupydoupyy on Letterboxd put it, “[Farley] is a beautiful soul. This movie shines light on that soul.”

8 Hacks (1997) – 3.5

This small-budget independent film chronicles a group of writers attempting to craft a 22-episode season of a TV series from one man’s sighting of a sexual encounter on a balcony. Bob Odenkirk makes a small cameo as a characterful cellmate in a prison cell during the writers’ brainstorms.

The film got middling reviews on Letterboxd for its pacing and leading performances. However, the cameo appearances from comedic actors like Odenkirk and Lisa Kudrow were praised for providing “so much more than this material is worth”, according to Val’s review.


7 Incredibles 2 (2018) – 3.5

The Incredibles movies are some of the most-liked Pixar movies by adults and children alike. The slick ’60s superhero visuals and sharp wit from filmmaker and animator Brad Bird always feel fresh, no matter how many superhero films are out at the box office.

6 The Disaster Artist (2017) – 3.5

This unique biographical film on the making of the movie The Room, the world’s best bad movie, was a hit with critics and film fans alike, receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film centers around the movie’s director and lead actor Tommy Wiseau, an eccentric man of mysterious origins and even more questionable talents.

Odenkirk joins an all-star ensemble cast of celebrities who love to hate the original movie, from Zac Efron to Sharon Stone. Bob stars as an acting teacher horrified by the acting performance of Tommy Wiseau.

5 Nobody (2021) – 3.5

In Bob Odenkirk’s biggest movie role to date, this action-comedy subverts movie tropes similarly to John Wick, and was written by the franchise’s creator, Derek Kolstad. Odenkirk stars as a retired former assassin and current family man who gets thrust back into the world of violent crime.

On Letterboxd, the film was praised for bringing a new take to the popular genres of action and comedy as a stand-out amongst other blockbusters, in large part due to Bob Odenkirk’s talents in both styles. As Jaime Rebanal put it, “There’s a lot more emotion to be felt in Bob Odenkirk yelling ‘GIVE ME THE GODDAMN KITTY CAT BRACELET!’ than there ever was in most major blockbusters out there now”.


4 Dolemite Is My Name (2019) – 3.6

Comedy legend Eddie Murphy makes a welcome return to film in the tongue-in-cheek biopic of blaxploitation filmmaker Rudy Ray Moore, best known for playing the character Dolemite. Bob Odenkirk played real-life exploitation movie producer Lawrence Woolner that initially rejected Moore and tries to win him over.

Seeing former SNL stars Odenkirk and Murphy work alongside one another is a treat for comedy fans everywhere. The biopic is a much-needed return to form for Murphy, blending both his comedic and dramatic talents in this award-winning film.

3 Nebraska (2013) – 3.8

This black-and-white dramedy portrays and ailing elderly man (played by Bruce Dern) who falls for a scam claiming he won a million-dollar sweepstakes that needs to be collected in Lincoln, Nebraska. His sons, played by Will Forte and Bob Odenkirk clash when it comes to indulging their father’s dementia-led fantasies.

A more dramatic turn for Odenkirk, the film was nominated for six Academy Awards, in large part due to its careful handling of sensitive topics such as Alzheimers and caretaking. As DallasFrance on Letterboxd described it, “An Alzheimer’s diagnosis might erase events from the patients’ mind, but caretakers are dealing with constant reminders of what came before.”


2 Waiting For Guffman (1996) – 3.9

Waiting For Guffman is one of a series of mockumentary musical films by comedians Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy. In one of his first movie roles, Bob Odenkirk plays a vampire in the audition room for the community theater musical that centers the film’s plot. Michael McKean, Odenkirk’s future Better Call Saul co-star, also stars.

The film’s ensemble cast of comedy greats makes for a timelessly funny watch. The musical comedy “felt like the blueprint for a lot of modern comedy a la the office/parks and rec/etc but with an insanely strong cast” according to lindsay on Letterboxd.


1 Little Women (2019) – 4.2

Bob Odenkirk’s most acclaimed movie on Letterboxd is the 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women. This Best Picture-nominated film follows the March family sisters – Beth, Amy, Meg, and Jo – as they come of age during the American Civil War era.

The movie is notable for its all-star cast, from Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan to Laura Dern and Meryl Streep. Odenkirk makes a cameo as the family patriarch Robert March, in the movie’s most heartwarming scene when Robert is reunited with his four daughters at Christmastime. As lauren on Letterboxd joked, “i think in a way, we are all bob odenkirk’s little women.”
