Chris Hemsworth’s recent comments on the future of his character Thor indicates that the God of Thunder could potentially die in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. When asked if he believed that his next appearance as Thor should be his last, Hemsworth stated that he felt like “we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean? I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans.” While the actor could be subverting audience expectations, perhaps the end of Thor is happening sooner rather than later.

While Thor: Love and Thunder confirmed that Thor would be returning in the future, it isn’t currently known what Chris Hemsworth’s last MCU movie will be. Hemsworth expressing a hero’s story being the “birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero” suggests that Thor could now be at the death stage. Because Thor’s next appearance hasn’t been confirmed, The Kang Dynasty might be an opportunity to send off the character. Hemsworth might have an idea on how Thor’s journey will end. Kang Killing Thor Would Be A Major MCU Statement

One of the best aspects of The Infinity Saga was stretching out Thanos’ story throughout several films. Since Kang appeared in Loki and will feature in the upcoming Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania film, killing Thor in Avengers 5 would set up a similar precedent to Avengers: Infinity War. That movie saw Thanos murder Loki during the opening scene, and Kang accomplishing the same thing with Thor would continue a major MCU statement that no one is safe during these event films. It could be a great parallel to Loki’s death and would also display how much of a threat Kang really is. A major antagonist such as Kang murdering an original Avenger would also be a really brutal and significant way for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor to exit the MCU.

Hemsworth Is Right About Ending Thor’s Story

Just like former Marvel actors Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth’s time as Thor has to come to an end at some point. His MCU arc thus far has been relatively repetitive as Thor continuously attempts to find himself, or he prepares to retire from battling until something dangerous pulls him back in. Iron Man’s arc was similar to this, so Thor resembling Tony Stark’s journey could eventually see the character either retire for good or die in battle. The latter currently seems like the right option for multiple reasons. For starters, Thor has always managed to find a way to defeat his enemies, and Kang the Conqueror could be the one enemy he cannot kill by himself or with help.

Love and Thunder showed how Asgardians end up in Valhalla. While Thor has had a hero’s journey up to this point, his death in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty could be the opportune time to guarantee his entry into the realm so he can reunite with the loved ones he has lost. Hemsworth’s Thor comments proves Love and Thunder‘s failures because he explained how the reception of his character is something that weighs heavily on him. Audiences found the most recent Thor movie to be a mixed bag, and that feedback could have contributed to Chris Hemsworth deciding to put down the hammer for good. This would end up being the perfect setup for closing Thor’s story even if it means the character dies.
