Jenny and Missy are returning to the Doctor Who franchise for a 60th anniversary audio event. The longest-running sci-fi television series in history, Doctor Who first premiered in 1963, and ran until 1989. He will be succeeded by the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Sex Education‘s Ncuti Gatwa.

Everything To Know About Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary

Doctor Who 2023 David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor hiding in a booth

Announced in November 2022, Once and Future is set to star previous Doctors Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and Christopher Eccleston, along with current Doctor David Tennant. The audio drama finds the Doctor injured in a Time Lord field hospital, haphazardly reverting to some of his previous incarnations in a process called “degeneration.” Alongside Tennant and Gomez, several other major guest stars are set to lend their voices to Once and Future, including Camille Coduri returning as Jackie Tyler, Nicola Walker as Liv Chenka, and Sadie Miller as companion Sarah Jane Smith.

The final episode of Once and Future will land in November, just in time for Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary television specials. There are three unnamed specials currently set to be released in November that will star Tennant’s new Fourteenth Doctor alongside companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). Neil Patrick Harris will reportedly be playing the villainous Toymaker, and several Doctor Who actors will be making guest appearances. The specials will also see Tennant hand the titular role off to Gatwa. While the 60th anniversary episodes will run on BBC in the United Kingdom, they will be released internationally on Disney+.

Though Doctor Who began as a television series, it has since become a massive sci-fi franchise, spanning across various different media forms. While there have been several Doctor Who audio plays released in the past, Once and Future is perhaps the most ambitious yet, combining Doctors, companions, and villains from across the decades-long franchise. With so much ahead for the 60th anniversary, 2023 is shaping up to be an incredibly exciting year for Doctor Who.
