Doogie Kamealoha MD Season 2 Storylines Teased By Showrunner

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. showrunner Kourtney Kang says what characters and storylines she wants the show to focus on in its second season.

The showrunner of Disney+’s Doogie Howser reboot Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. teases potential storylines for the next season of the streaming series. The original series Doogie Howser starred Neil Patrick Harris as a teen genius who must balance his life of being a doctor with the regular problems of a hormonal young man and ran for four seasons from 1989 to 1993. Doogie Kameāloha both gender-swaps the lead role and transplants the series from Los Angeles to Hawai’i. The show is technically not a continuation of the original series, instead electing to have the original show exist within the world of the series, which is how Doogie Kameāloha, played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, gets her nickname.

Doogie Kameāloha introduces new tangles to the standard Doogie Howser plot, including the fact that Doogie’s work-life balance is skewed toward the former because her mother is also her boss. Throughout the 10-episode first season, which began airing on September 8, 2021 and ran through November 10, the expected teen drama is also featured, including Doogie’s best friend Steph (Emma Meisel) having a crush on her brother Kai (Matt Sato), who reciprocates her feelings but doesn’t know how to express them properly. The show also stars Wes Tian, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Mapuana Makia, with Kathleen Rose Perkins and Jason Scott Lee as Doogie’s parents.

Speaking with Collider, Doogie Kameāloha showrunner Kourtney Kang was asked what the future of the show was going to look like. She eagerly explained that the world of the show is going to expand, leaning on the incredible ensemble they have assembled and bringing in a lot more specificity about the setting and the culture of Hawai’i. These potential storylines include exploring more about Noelani and Charles, Doogie’s coworkers at the hospital, and giving Matt Sato’s Kai a lot more to do as well. Read the full quote below:

There are so many stories and 10 episodes happened so quick. There is so much that we wanted to explore. One thing I’m really excited to get more into in Season 2 is more stories that only our show could tell about Hawaii and Hawaiian culture, the things that are happening there, and what it’s really like. There are stories we wanna tell at the hospital, between what’s going on in Noelani’s life and Charles’ life.

We’ve set up these great characters and now it’d be really great, in Season 2, to have the real estate to delve further into what’s going on with them as well. Season 1 has been so much about Lahela and the family, and now we have so many great players to go to. With Mapuana and Jeffrey, their friendship is so wonderful. Mom and dad have so much love to them. And even Dr. Lee, by the end of the season, is part of the little family there at work. It would be really exciting to delve further into those characters. Matt Sato, who plays Kai, is so wonderful, so I’d love to delve more into his character and Brian Patrick. We have so many great players to go to.

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. season 2 has not been officially confirmed by Disney+, as it is currently only a few days after season 1 aired its finale. However, the streamer tends to make its announcements without too much delay. Their comparable teen reboot series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was renewed for a third season just two weeks after season 2 concluded this summer, so news on the Doogie front should be forthcoming.

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. certainly has a stacked cast to contend with. In addition to the main stars, the series also includes recurring characters played by YouTuber Alex Aiono and Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng, who was also a featured player in Shang-Chi. A new season would give them the chance to flex their muscles and really explore what these actors have to offer now that the character groundwork is completely laid.
