The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie, Honor Among Thieves’, runtime is revealed, and is way shorter than an actual campaign of the game.

The runtime for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has been revealed, and it’s much shorter than an average campaign of the tabletop game. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is an upcoming fantasy film based on the popular tabletop roleplaying game, centering on a group of thieves out to stop an evil wizard they’ve inadvertently delivered a powerful artifact to. The film, which stars such big names as Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant, is set to be released on March 31.

In a report from Collider, it has been announced that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has a runtime of two hours and 17 minutes. While the runtime clocks in at slightly longer than average in comparison to other films, average Dungeons & Dragons gameplay sessions often last between three and five hours. Full campaigns can even go on for years at a time, making the film a significantly shorter experience for players of the game.

What Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Runtime Means for the Film

While Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the first blockbuster film based on the game to hit screens, a trilogy of D&D films predates it. The first film, eponymously titled Dungeons & Dragons, was released in 2000 with a runtime of one hour and 48 minutes. The movie was a box-office bomb, but two direct-to-DVD sequels were ordered, with the finale of the trilogy only clocking in at just one hour and 26 minutes. This makes Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves the longest Dungeons & Dragons film ever made, despite the shorter-than-expected runtime.

With action-packed films like Marvel and DC releases now moving towards nearly three-hour runtimes, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is shorter than some might had hoped it would be. However, clocking in at over two hours still gives the film plenty of time to explore the intricate, fantastical lore of Dungeons & Dragons, while still fitting in a few action sequences as well. Trailers have also teased a healthy dose of comedy and character development in the film, meaning that there will be a lot to pack into the just-over two-hour movie.

Though some viewers have expressed disappointment that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves isn’t longer, others are happy to see that three-hour films aren’t strictly the norm. Audiences have been divided over film durations in recent years as runtimes have become longer, but D&D players in particular were eager for the big-screen game adaptation to at least be the length of an average session. However, two hours and 17 minutes is still more than enough time for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to make a big impression on moviegoers and Dungeons & Dragons fans alike.
