Every Toho Monster That Could Live Inside Godzilla vs Kong’s Hollow Earth

[ad_1]

The MonsterVerse introduced fans to a new world by diving deep into the Hollow Earth, which could turn out to be the home of several Toho kaiju.

Some of Toho’s famous monsters could exist in Godzilla vs. Kong’s Hollow Earth. The latest installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse dove deep into Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Hollow Earth concept. APEX’s search for a mysterious energy source that could power Mechagodzilla introduced viewers to a vast world, not unlike the one imagined by Jules Verne in the classic science fiction novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Kong’s new home in the MonsterVerse isn’t just a large tunnel system like it was originally believed to be. Beneath the tunnels is a vast world complete with mountains, beautiful scenery, clouds, forests, and more. Plus, there are all sorts of unique creatures that occupy it.

The ones seen in the movie were all original to the MonsterVerse, but as later movies further explore this area, it could be revealed some of the kaiju from Toho’s Godzilla movies reside down there too. The Hollow Earth could be the best way to bring in fan-favorites from Toho’s rich library of monsters. Here’s every Toho kaiju who could be present in the MonsterVerse’s hidden Hollow Earth world.

Megalon

The titular villain of 1973’s Godzilla vs. Megalon would feel right at home in the Hollow Earth. It was explained in his first and only movie appearance that the giant, cockroach-like monster is the champion of a subterranean kingdom called Seatopia. In a future film, the MonsterVerse could adapt some version of that story by establishing that like Godzilla, Megalon was worshipped by a forgotten civilization located somewhere in this underground world.

Baragon

Another kaiju who would be perfect for the MonsterVerse’s Hollow Earth is Baragon, a four-legged horned beast and a resident of Godzilla’s Monster Island in the 1960s. A creature who looked similar to him appeared in Godzilla vs. Kong’s Hollow Earth sequence, but this is most likely an original creature. Even so, Baragon could be alive down there somewhere. As a monster whose primary method of travel is digging tunnels, it would make sense for him to live in a place deep underground.

Kamacuras

Son of Godzilla Kamacuras

In Son of Godzilla, Godzilla and Minila battled a trio of Kamacuras, which are giant praying mantises. If they exist in the MonsterVerse, they could be among the various monsters Kong will have to contend with while he roams his new world. Considering he was attacked by two Warbats as soon as he arrived, it’d be surprising if he wasn’t met with multiple challengers in the near future.

Kumonga

One of the monsters Godzilla had to deal with during his time on Monster Island in the Showa series was Kumonga, a humongous spider capable of immobilizing opponents with his webbing. Legendary could translate him to the MonsterVerse by making him a Titan that Kong has to defend his new home from.

Battra

During the Heisei series of Godzilla films, it was discovered Mothra has an evil counterpart known as Battra. In contrast to Mothra who protects humanity, Battra cares more about the planet itself and thinks that humans are the real problem. Including a Titan like him in the MonsterVerse could allow the franchise to revisit the themes of King of the Monsters regarding the threat people pose to Earth’s environment.

Titanosaurus

Terror of Mechagodzilla giant monster fight

Godzilla vs. Kong made it clear that Hollow Earth has bodies of water, so its environment may boast a few aquatic Titans, one of which being Titanosaurus. In Terror of Mechagodzilla, he was a peaceful kaiju living in the oceans until he was mind-controlled into helping Mechagodzilla fight Godzilla. If he lives in the Hollow Earth, he could be a benevolent creature that won’t interfere with Kong’s reign or Monarch’s activities.

Ebirah

Titanosaurus could be just one Titan living in the Hollow Earth’s oceans. There’s also the giant crab monster Godzilla fought in the ocean in Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. Ebirah could appear in the MonsterVerse as one of many denizens of the Hollow Earth world. He may not be a huge threat to Kong, but he could give the Hollow Earth’s new king a bit of trouble.

Gorosaurus

Up until the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, Gorosaurus was the only kaiju to have met Godzilla and Kong. He helped the King of the Monsters beat Ghidorah in Destroy All Monsters and had a one-on-one fight with Kong in King Kong Escapes. Since there are very few actual dinosaur Titans in the MonsterVerse, this gigantic allosaurus (known for his mean kangaroo kick) would be a fun addition to the Hollow Earth and potential challenger to Kong’s alpha status.

Anguirus

An Anguirus Easter egg in King of the Monsters set up his existence in the Hollow Earth. A skeleton that looks identical to him was spotted in Godzilla’s underwater city. The resemblance was also acknowledged by King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty. Rights issues naturally would have stood in the way of the MonsterVerse confirming the connection at the time, but it could be revisited if that situation changes. It could be that a living member of Anguirus’ species is hidden in the Hollow Earth. If so, he could eventually leave and join forces with Godzilla at some point down the line.

Varan

Varan is a Toho monster who has only made two live-action appearances. After starring as the main antagonist in 1958’s Varan the Unbelievable, he returned for a very brief role in Destroy All Monsters and has never been seen again. Given that he’s a massive reptile who glides through the air like a flying squirrel, he certainly has a design that would be quite interesting to see in the MonsterVerse. He could be one of the new Titans that Monarch may discover through its Hollow Earth research.

Manda

Kong having to get help from a HEAV to beat one of the Warbats is a problematic sign for him if he ever comes across Manda. Toho’s Manda doesn’t have wings, but the sea dragon could attempt to constrict itself around his body. As for how he’d fit, Toho’s version in Atragon was depicted as the protector of an underwater kingdom, so it could be his MonsterVerse counterpart would have a similar function.

King Caesar

King of the Monsters implementing fantasy and mystical elements with the introduction of Mothra proves Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla’s King Caesar could work in the MonsterVerse. Like the original version of the character, he could be a guardian deity that can be summoned by playing a particular song. Titans being stirred by music is an idea that’s been confirmed by Dougherty so that being the case with King Caesar does seem plausible. If his resting place is in the Hollow Earth, he could one day emerge as an ally to Kong.

Gigan

Was King Ghidorah the only alien on Earth in the MonsterVerse? Possibly, but if there’s one, there can always be more. Gigan, an extraterrestrial, cyborg foe of Godzilla with hooks for hands, could have traveled to Earth thousands of years ago just like Ghidorah did. If he made his way down to the Hollow Earth, that could be why he didn’t wake up in King of the Monsters along with the other Titans. If Kong or Monarch disturbs his slumber following Godzilla Vs Kong, he could emerge as the next major MonsterVerse villain.
