FF7 Remake: What Happens If Sephiroth Wins?

[ad_1]

Sephiroth finally has the chance to win this time around in Final Fantasy VII Remake – but what could actually happen if Meteor hit the world?

Final Fantasy VII Remake has the chance to let Sephiroth win this time around, but what would actually happen if he did? FF7 was created in a bubble, with no intention for any sequels, as none of the Final Fantasy games up to that point had a direct continuation, so the ending of the story wasn’t planned with more entries in mind.

FF7 would go on to become one of the most popular video games of the original PlayStation era, helping to turn Square Enix (then called Squaresoft) into a truly global entity. As such, Square would create a wide array of FF7 multimedia prequels, sequels, and side stories to milk the characters for all they were worth in terms of crossovers and merchandising, eventually culminating in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, which was the name given to the library of different properties set in the overarching universe of FF7.

The Compilation added to the lore of FF7, which raised questions about why certain elements weren’t mentioned in the original game. The obvious answer is “they weren’t invented yet”, which is why the new stories had to explain why certain characters and concepts were unknown until their appearance in the story. Dirge of Cerberus was a sequel to FF7 on the PS2 that added a lot to the lore of the world, including something that changes how the ending of FF7 would have played out if Sephiroth was victorious.

Sephiroth The God & Omega Weapon Awakens

Sephiroth’s plan was to use the Black Materia to summon Meteor, which would cause a massive wound on the surface of the world. The Lifestream would rush to heal the wound, and Sephiroth intended to be in the center of the energy so that he could use it to take control of the Lifestream and become a god. FF7 Remake has established that the characters are no longer bound to the original story, and this time around, it seems that Sephiroth is aware of what happened in FF7, where he was defeated by Cloud, and Meteor is stopped by Holy before Sephiroth could finally realize his ultimate aims. It’s possible that Sephiroth could use this knowledge in FF7 Remake to succeed where his original plan failed, becoming a god.

The only wrinkle to Sephiroth’s plan is something that was introduced quite a long time back in FF7’s line of spin-off games, specifically Dirge of Cerberus. The planet is protected by several colossal Weapon monsters, who are the most powerful creatures in the FF7. Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon would wipe the floor with Sephiroth. Dirge of Cerberus introduced Omega Weapon, which is a creature that is summoned when the planet is in danger. If Meteor hits the world, then the number of deaths will cause the Lifestream to summon Omega Weapon (and its servant, Chaos), to call the remaining Lifestream into itself, so it can flee into space and find a new world to inhabit.

If Sephiroth wins, then it would become a race between who could achieve their goals first. It’s never stated how long Sephiroth’s ascension would take, or if it would even work. If he’s able to outpace the Lifestream, then he might be able to prevent it from summoning Omega Weapon and achieve his goal. If the Lifestream summons Omega Weapon and manages to flee the world, then it might be able to leave Sephiroth behind before he can complete his plan. Sephiroth could be left as the last living being on the Final Fantasy VII world, ruling over a barren planet.
