The first look at Finn Wolfhard’s directorial debut, Hell of a Summer, has been revealed, and it looks remarkably like Stranger Things. The actor first gained recognition for his role as Mike Wheeler in Netflix’s massively popular series, Stranger Things, and made the transition to film with high-profile roles in It and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Wolfhard is also set to make his feature directorial debut with a horror comedy film titled Hell of a Summer.

Now, the first look at Hell of a Summer has been revealed via Variety.

Hell of a Summer Finn Wolfhard Billy Bryk first look

It’s unclear if the resemblance is intentional or not, though the first look photo looks remarkably like Stranger Things, which often sees its young protagonists confronting unknown danger from behind the barrels of their flashlights. One of the first Stranger Things season 4 images showed a very similar sight with the main characters exploring the Creel House. Check out the Hell of a Summer image above.

Everything We Know About Hell of a Summer

Hell of a Summer is written, directed by, and stars Wolfhard and his frequent collaborator Billy Bryk. The two previously starred together in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut, When You Finish Saving the World. Hell of a Summer marks Wolfhard and Bryk’s lastest collaboration as well as their own feature directorial debuts. Hell of a Summer also has one high-profile producer on board in Jason Bateman.

With Wolfhard and Bryk leading the Hell of a Summer cast, The White Lotus star Fred Hechinger, Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon, Mad About You‘s Abby Quinn, and Pardis Saremi round out the rest of the cast. Hell of a Summer started filming this past summer in Ontario and is now finished filming and being edited, according to Wolfhard. The movie is still without a release date, though now that it has a distributor, one should be announced soon.

Hell of a Summer plot details remain limited, though Wolfhard has described the movie as a comedy slasher that takes place at a summer camp and follows the counselors before the campers arrive as murders begin occurring. Likely an R-rated teen slasher, Hell of a Summer probably won’t end up being as much like Stranger Things as this first-look photo would indicate. Still, it would appear that Wolfhard’s directorial debut has taken some inspiration, perhaps too much, from Stranger Things for its visuals. Future looks at Hell of a Summer should look to set the movie apart in a meaningful way.
