Galactus Could Join The MCU as a Hero, in Marvel’s Eternity Watch

Galactus is known as the Devourer of Worlds, but his time in the Eternity Watch may show a new way to introduce him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Warning! Spoiler for Guardians of the Galaxy #17 by Marvel Comics below

With Dormammu taking over Ego the Living Planet, Marvel Comics just made a surprise reference to Galactus’ time as a hero as part of the Eternity Watch. In Guardians of the Galaxy #17, Nova and Quasar try to figure how to defeat the cosmic monstrosity, realizing the power boost the Devourer of Worlds gave to Ego when he was the Lifebringer might have just occurred again without him. The moment recalls when Galactus was a positive force and hints at how he can be introduced as a hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Comics readers know Galactus is one of the most destructive forces in the universe, as he devourers entire worlds to feed his hunger and keep balance in the Cosmos. In Marvel’s Ultimates series, the concept of Galactus was flipped on its head, as the greatest cosmic heroes figured out a way to reverse engineer the villain into the Lifebringer. Instead of devouring planets, Galactus would restore them and bring life to the worlds he previously ravaged. In Ultimates 2, Galactus would revert to his original form join the Eternity Watch – a team of cosmic entities (including Ego-Prime, Psi-Hawk, and Infinaut) who helped save a weakened Eternity as he was chained and jailed by the First Firmament.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #17 by Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC’s Cory Petit, the superteam struggle with the revelation Dormammu has taken over Ego the Living Planet as part of the ‘Last Annihilation.’ When Nova and Quasar confront the problem head-on, Richard Rider asks his teammate if he talks to Galactus. Quasar reveals he did before Thor killed Galactus. Nova asks him if the current Dormammu/Ego combination is similar to when Galactus boosted Ego with his powers to give a body as part of the Eternity Watch. Quasar tells him it’s impossible, but Dormammu emerges with his own massive body.

Galactus Eternity Watch Marvel Comics 1

It’s interesting to see the Eternity Watch referenced a few years after the storyline originally concluded. Although, it makes sense considering Ewing penned both that story and the current Guardians of the Galaxy run. Still, it’s a great reminder that Galactus once was part of an unlikely cosmic team that served as a collective Eternity. If the MCU doesn’t introduce Galactus with his classic origin, making him a hero as part of the Eternity Watch would be a bold direction to take him – and give him a further purpose in the Marvel Universe. Plus, there’s no reason he couldn’t break from the team and become a villain later on.

Galactus will probably be introduced as the Devourer of Worlds with the Silver Surfer guiding him to Earth. However, if the Marvel Cinematic Universe wants to try something different, making him part of the Eternity Watch would introduce MCU fans to a cosmic side of the Marvel Universe they’ve never seen before. It would be an exciting yet shocking change for Galactus.
