Harrison Ford & Jason Segel’s Shrinking Scores Season 2 Renewal

Harrison Ford and Jason Segel’s Apple TV+ dramedy series Shrinking has been renewed for season 2. Shrinking is still in the midst of its 10-episode first season, with episode 8 set to air on March 10. Despite its newness, the show has garnered quite a bit of attraction, becoming one of Apple TV+’s most popular shows and boasting a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score. The series follows Jimmy Laird (Segel), a widowed therapist and father who begins treating his patients with his brutally honest opinions as a coping mechanism for his life struggles.

As shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Shrinking has officially been renewed for season 2. Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, who co-created the show with Segel and are also the creative minds behind Ted Lasso, have revealed that they have a three-season plan for Shrinking. The pair is closer to making that plan a reality as Apple TV+’s head of programming, Matt Cherniss, shared his delight at renewing the series. Check out his statement below:

We have loved the engaging, touching and hilarious world of Shrinking since the beginning, and it has been wonderful to watch as audiences around the world continue to connect with these big-hearted characters. We can’t wait for viewers to experience what the cast and creative team have for season two.

Shrinking Scores Renewal Despite Stirring Controversy

Some may be surprised by Apple’s hasty renewal of Shrinking considering that, despite its popularity, the show has also garnered some criticism. Most of the Shrinking criticism has stemmed from its depiction of therapy. In fact, some of the ideas that it presents could be seen as insulting to the industry of therapy and psychiatry. This is because the show proposes the idea that therapists could actually help patients more if they weren’t tied down by ethics and regulations.

Laird gets brutally honest with clients and even crosses lines that would never be acceptable in real life. Additionally, there are several concerning depictions in Shrinking, including one scene where Laird threatens to quit being the therapist of a woman he believes is a victim of domestic abuse unless she leaves her husband. While Shrinking doesn’t claim to represent therapy accurately, some viewers who are struggling with whether to seek therapy could potentially be dissuaded by watching a show about what a therapist, who likely shouldn’t be practicing at all, really feels about his patients.

Ultimately, though, Shrinking‘s fictional and comedic premise largely excuses its unrealistic depiction of therapy. In fact, it could be argued that the show is more about human connection than therapy. However, it can’t be denied that therapy and mental health are extremely delicate topics, and that alone makes Shrinking‘s decision to make them primary aspects of a comedy series a bit concerning. Despite the controversy, many still find the show entertaining and enjoyable, and accept it’s not to be taken seriously. As a result, Shrinking will be coming back for season 2 in the future.
