Harry Potter: 10 Subjects Hogwarts Should Offer, According To Reddit

[ad_1]

The upcoming video game Hogwarts Legacy is set to release on February 10, 2023. The Harry Potter title will take place at Hogwarts school in the late 1800s and will allow players to choose a house, attend classes, and experience the magical school like never before. This is particularly exciting to long-time fans who have always dreamed of getting a Hogwarts letter of their own.

While there is plenty to love about the ancient school, it also has shortcomings. For example, fans on Reddit have noticed that the classes that Harry and his friends attend in the books and movies seem somewhat limited. Even in the magical world of Harry Potter, school kids need to be prepared for adulthood, and Redditors have thought of a few classes that might benefit the students of Hogwarts.

Enchantments

Spells come in several categories, and Hogwarts students will take Charms and Transfiguration classes to learn about most of them. However, Redditor Important-Stomach474 finds that these classes, especially Charms, are “too much of a catch-all” for the various types of spells.

They suggested an Enchantments class that might cover the kind of magic used to change an item’s function. For example, Dumbledore enchants the Mirror of Erised to hide the Philosopher’s Stone. Harry never learned magic anything like that in school, and while it could be a dangerous class for Harry Potter students, that wouldn’t be out of the norm.

The Study Of Magical Objects

In the wizarding world, witches and wizards use a huge variety of magical objects to get by. These seemed normal to students like Ron, who grew up in magical households, but they were utterly foreign to Harry. He had to feel ignorant year after year as someone explained something commonplace to him.

For this reason, Redditor Important-Stomach474 thought Hogwarts should offer a class on magical objects. The course could include “how to identify, create, [and] control them.” This wouldn’t just be useful to Muggle-raised wizards but anyone dependent on these items.

Healing Magic

In Deathly Hallows, Harry cuts his finger and considers that he has never learned how to heal himself. He also realizes this is a significant oversight since he was in physical danger year after year.

This would not have been the case if Hogwarts had a class for “first aid” or “healing,” as pointed out by Redditor StevieBlunder44. The class could start out educating students on how to mend scrapes and bruises quickly and extend to far more life-threatening maladies for those who wish to continue with the course.

Wizarding World Government And Economics

The Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter

Considering almost every wizarding career in Harry Potter is within the Ministry of Magic, it seems that Hogwarts would offer a class specifically on the ins and outs of the government. Of course, Hermione was always there to explain to Harry and Ron how wizarding law works, but that is due only to her great love for books.

For students less self-motivated than Hermione, a Government and Economics class would be important. Redditor Lower-Consequence stated that any “social studies” classes would look very different from those in the Muggle world, but it would be even more critical.

Common Classes Found In Muggle Schools

The presence of magic in the wizarding world has made it look very different from that of the Muggles. Modern technologies are absent, and the academic values instilled in Muggle children, like math and science, are not a concern for wizarding students.

Still, several overlooked parts of Muggle academia would be beneficial for wizards to know. “Basic math, English, literature, and science” are all topics that still apply to a magical community, according to Redditor Any-Conflict8462. So why wouldn’t they be taught to wizarding students at school?

Latin

While the English language is not studied at Hogwarts, one Reddit user thinks Latin would be worth teaching, mainly since “90% of the spells are based on Latin words.” This could help students understand what a potentially lethal spell in Harry Potter might do before using it. An example is Sectumsempra, meaning “cut forever,” which Harry unknowingly used on Draco Malfoy.

If students thoroughly understand the language that correlates with their magic, they will be better equipped to create spells for themselves. This could mean endless possibilities and a better wizarding world all around.

Magical Home Economics

Knowing how to turn an animal into a goblet is interesting, but it has few practical uses in the real world. So, when Harry, Ron, and Hermione are on the run in Deathly Hallows, they find their brains full of useless knowledge, with no idea how to provide for their basic needs.

If Hogwarts provided a Magical Home Economics class, as Redditor KaraLynne suggests, students would graduate knowing how to magically cook, mend clothes, clean, or even cut their hair, just “like Mrs. Weasley.” Ron wouldn’t have to wish for his mother to feed him. He could do it himself.

Health Class Or Magical Anatomy

In Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Newt Scamander explained that witches and wizards have physiological differences from Muggles. This surprised audiences since Harry never learned anything of the sort while at Hogwarts.

One Redditor thought this was another excellent reason among many for Hogwarts to “add a Health class” as a required course. It’s crucial for anyone to understand their body and how it works to ensure they properly care for themselves and others.

Alchemy

Since the Harry Potter series demonstrated how useful Nicolas Flamel’s profession could be, Redditor Aromantic-Ad-1350 suggested that Hogwarts start offering an “Alchemy” class. Students wouldn’t be expected to produce Philosopher’s Stones of their own, but the topic could still be helpful in many ways.

Where Transfiguration concerns everyday objects, Alchemy transforms elements. This can be used to increase wealth or formulate potent elixirs. The class might not be offered to first-year students, but it could be extremely valuable for advanced placement.

Wizarding Cultural Diversity

In Goblet of Fire, many students learn for the first time that there are other magical schools like Hogwarts in different countries around the world. Since they all likely should have learned this years ago, the revelation was a little concerning. Combined with the fact that Newt knows very little about American wizarding culture in Fantastic Beasts, it seems as if Hogwarts does a poor job of teaching about other cultures.

Redditor Clear-Teaching5783 found that a class on culture could help Hogwarts students learn about the world outside their own in a “more meaningful” way. This could also extend to learning about the cultures of centaurs, Goblins, Veela, and more since Harry and his friends were woefully uneducated about them even in later school years.
