The upcoming A24 series Hazbin Hotel, based on Vivienne Medrano’s massively successful YouTube pilot, releases its first look at Lucifer Morningstar.

The upcoming A24 series Hazbin Hotel releases its first look at Lucifer Morningstar, Charlie’s father. Hazbin Hotel, an animated adult musical series, began as a YouTube pilot in 2019, created by Vivienne “Vivziepop” Medrano. To date, the pilot episode has over 81 million views on YouTube. Hazbin Hotel‘s immense popularity lead to production company A24 picking up the show in 2020, with the intention to release it as a long-form TV series. Since March, Hazbin Hotel has been releasing new looks at the series’ redesigned characters every month, starting with Alastor the Radio Demon, porn star Angel Dust, and Princess of Hell Charlie. The series follows Charlie as she attempts to quell Hell’s overpopulation problem by redeeming sinners at the aptly named Happy Hotel. Though there is no set release date for the series yet, Hazbin Hotel confirmed on their Twitter page that the series is expected to premiere in summer 2023.

A post to the Hazbin Hotel Twitter page has now revealed the first look at Lucifer Morningstar, King of Hell, and father of the show’s protagonist, Charlie. The Hazbin Hotel image sees Lucifer in an all-white tuxedo, sitting on a red-and-black throne adorned with feathers and eyes. Lucifer is also surrounded by fairy lights, and piles of rubber ducks. What Role Will Lucifer Play in Hazbin Hotel?

The Morningstar Family in Hazbin Hotel

While Lucifer is not a new addition to the Hazbin Hotel universe, this image marks the first time that he has been fully revealed to fans. Lucifer’s only appearances in the original Hazbin Hotel pilot were in a portrait that hung in the Happy Hotel, showing a family picture of the Morningstars, and when he was depicted as a malevolent shadow hovering over Charlie’s hopes and dreams. References to Lucifer have also been seen in the Hazbin Hotel spinoff series Helluva Boss, which recently entered season 2 on YouTube. However, Lucifer has never physically appeared in any Hazbin Hotel work to date.

Though Lucifer is the King of Hell, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be a major antagonist in Hazbin Hotel. There has been little information released about the character, but Medrano and former Hazbin Hotel visual developer Faustisse have described him as “very silly and goofy,” much like other characters in the series. Faustisse has also said that while Lucifer is not an especially good father, he still loves his daughter, meaning that he doesn’t necessarily want Charlie’s hotel to fail. However, Charlie’s ominous, shadowy depiction of her father could certainly indicate otherwise. It seems that Lucifer could be an anti-hero on Hazbin Hotel, someone who, while not necessarily being against Charlie, could pose an obstacle to her goals just by being himself.

With new redesigns of Hazbin Hotel‘s characters being released every month or so, there are still some characters left to be revealed, like Lilith Morningstar (Charlie’s mother) and Seviathan von Eldritch (Charlie’s ex-boyfriend). Though there is no firm release date, there is less than a year until the series is expected to debut, and longtime fans are eagerly awaiting the full series. While Medrano has reassured fans with minimal character redesigns, only time will tell how much A24 has changed Hazbin Hotel from its initial highly popular concept.
