It also examines the lives of their friends, including Tao (William Gao), Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), and Isaac (Tobie Donovan). As Heartstopper season 2 is set to debut later this year, Osman shared with Attitude Magazine that she has an ending already worked out.

Osman reveals that she knew exactly how the story will end. Though she doesn’t reveal any details about what the conclusion will consist of, Osman adds that it’s something she’s been building towards and clarifies that it will be a happy ending. Here is her full quote below:

“I’ve known for ages exactly how Heartstopper is going to end. It’s been really helpful to have that, like, endpoint for me to kind of build towards. I’m not going to spoil anything, but I mean, it’s a happy ending. I feel like everyone knows that.”

What To Expect From Heartstopper Season 2

Nick and Charlie gaze at each other happily while waiting for a train in Heartstopper

In the Heartstopper season 1 finale, Tao and Nick find common ground in wanting Charlie to be happy. As the episode progresses, Nick tells Charlie he doesn’t want to break up, and they share a kiss. On a seaside date, Nick says that he plans to come out, and later that day, Nick does come out to his mother (played by Olivia Colman, who is returning for Heartstopper season 2) in one of the show’s sweetest scenes. It’s a finale that beautifully wraps up the major arcs, leaving viewers on a hopeful note about what comes next.

However, there are plans for the upcoming episodes. Osman revealed that the series will explore Isaac’s asexuality. Osman adds that she hopes it won’t feel like a lesson, instead allowing the audience to learn more about the character and discover new aspects of him. In its first outing, Heartstopper invested a lot in demonstrating that Charlie’s friends had their own experiences and hardships that they were dealing with, just as he did.

A happy ending for Heartstopper is very much in keeping with the spirit that helped earn the adaptation so much acclaim. It’s not a surprise that the farewell won’t be a downer, but it’s reassuring and makes the journey of getting to that happy send-off all the more important.
