House Of The Dragon: 10 GoT Characters Who Would’ve Supported Aegon’s Claim To Throne

The finale of House Of The Dragon officially split up the Targaryen house following the death of King Viserys. While not all allegiances have been included at this point, fans have already got a sense of who House Velaryon will be standing with after Rhaenys and Corlys proudly offered to support the Blacks. With House Stark also confirmed to be appearing in season 2, it looks like the Blacks’ army is about to get even stronger.

While it’s going to be a while before viewers learn of who the Hightowers have managed to sway to their side, some have begun to guess who may have betrayed Rhaenyra based on their Game of Thrones counterparts. These Game of Thrones characters, in particular, are the ones that would have most likely backed Aegon’s claim to the Iron Throne.

Viserys III Targaryen Would Have Backed The Greens

Viserys III would have been great in House of the Dragon. Despite his namesake, he’s more like the character of Aegon II than that of King Viserys I. He was an extremely selfish character that did vile things simply because it was what he wanted, and he thought he was entitled to whatever he wanted.

Although he was technically the heir to the Targaryen dynasty at the start of the original series, he would have fit in with many of the other Green Targaryen family members in House of the Dragon. Given how misogynistic he was in his own time, it’s likely he would have supported the claim of the brother over that of the sister.

Robert Baratheon Would Have Likely Betrayed Rhaenyra For The Greens

Although Robert Baratheon ended the Targaryen Dynasty, the blame can largely be put on the Mad King who didn’t give them realm much of a choice but to end his tyranny. However, if Robert was in a different situation during the Targaryen Civil War, he likely would have backed king Aegon.

Robert was more of a warrior, at least in his youth, than he was a politician. He had his misogynistic qualities as well and likely would have backed the male claim to the throne. Just as Borros Baratheon is backing Aegon, Robert would have taken a similar route that would have given his house the best potential to put them in a more powerful position.

Cersei Lannister Would Have Backed The Greens

Although Cersei was a woman driven by power (and in a similar situation as Rhaenyra’s children were illegitimate), she was still a Lannister. The Lannisters were known for being intelligent and strategic, which kept their family in a position of power over the years.

Just as Alicent took over King’s Landing for Aegon when his father died, Cersei took over the kingdom for her son when Robert died. Given the similar situations, it’s likely Cersei would have approved of this decision and backed the ruler that had the most support within the realm. Since a woman has never sat on the Iron Throne in House of the Dragon, the logical ally would have been Aegon.

Roose Bolton Would Have Likely Betrayed House Black

Roose Bolton was most concerned with gaining recognition for his house and pushing them to the top. This was proven when he chose to betray Robb Stark and become the Warden of the North. He cared little for civility and was quick to use violence if it was for his benefit.

As a strategical man, he would have seen that the powerful lords within the kingdom would back a male heir to the throne. If the Greens had offered him a proposal similar to Aemond’s offer of marriage to Borros Targaryen, he wouldn’t have cared about any previous vows made to Rhaenyra’s claim.

Joffrey Baratheon Would Have Likely Aligned With Team Green

Although Aegon has proven to be quite sadistic, he still isn’t comparable to the cruel nature of Joffrey Baratheon. However, given how power-hungry Joffrey was when he was king, he would have likely supported the male ruler over the sister.

Given Joffrey’s personality, he would be one of the characters to appreciate the gruesome death of Lucerys at the hands of Aemond and his dragon. Similarly to Aegon, he wasn’t a good king but followed his house as long as it seemed to benefit him, so he would have easily followed the lead of the other Lannisters and supported Aegon.

Olenna Tyrell Would Have Sided With Team Green

Olenna Tyrell is one of the most powerful women in Game of Thrones. Her house is extremely wealthy and that puts them in a position to pick and choose the alliances that would best suit their house’s position in the kingdom.

Although Olenna was very intelligent, she was first and foremost concerned with protecting her house. Regardless if she liked Rhaenyra or not, she would have understood that the powerful men in the realm support a male heir and therefore would have likely supported Aegon. However, given how she ended Joffrey, she also wouldn’t be opposed to betraying him to protect her family.

Tywin Lannister Would Have Backed House Hightower

Tywin was one of the most intelligent political minds in the kingdom of Westeros during the time of Game of Thrones. In the face of the king, he wasn’t one to bow down and hold his tongue. On the other hand, he often spoke out if he thought a ruler was making a poor decision.

Among these characteristics, Tywin was also power-hungry. Aegon is clearly easier to manipulate than Rhaenyra, making Aegon more favorable in the eyes of Tywin. Just as Otto is using his control to manipulate the king, Tywin would have sided with the Targaryens whom he could easily persuade to his benefit.

Petyr Baelish Would Have Certainly Joined Team Green For A Brief Spell Of Time

Little Finger’s nickname fits him perfectly in the series because he was a lowly man within the kingdom. However, his ambitions were far from small. Petyr was largely unconcerned with morals, unlike other advisors (like Varys), and strived to make himself more powerful.

Petyr has been rightfully compared to Larys Strong and Otto Hightower – which has certainly been appropriate given all of these men being conniving individuals mainly concerned with themselves. While the Blacks are more concerned with dedicated, morally upright allies, Littlefinger fits more in with the Greens who use threats and bargaining to maintain power.

Bronn Of The Blackwater Would Have Joined House Hightower

This character is a fan-favorite (as made clear through these memes dedicated to Bronn’s character). He is unique in the sense that he has no noble blood and is just a man looking to better his position. However, although a favorite character, Bronn would not be characterized as moral.

He is loyal to his friends…as long as they give him something that benefits him. He wouldn’t be persuaded by the Blacks’ demand for unfaltering loyalty and would easily be paid off by the higher bidder. For the right price, he’d work for any lord that seeks him out.

Stannis Baratheon Would Have Joined Team Green

Stannis was one of the most power-hungry characters and was so consumed with his own ambitions that he even went so far as to burn his own daughter alive. He was also driven by the belief that he was the rightful heir to the throne as the oldest blood relative to Robert Baratheon.

Stannis proved he was dedicated to the tradition of bloodlines and the importance of male heirs. Given that Rhaenyra’s children are bastard-born sons, and Aegon is a trueborn male heir to King Viserys, Stannis would have likely regarded the king as the rightful heir to Westeros.
