One character that has been confirmed to return late in the series is Barney Stinson, when How I Met Your Father catches up to the moment when Sophie rear-ends him. The producers have talked about how Barney’s appearance will be a major turning point for Sophie. They have also figured out storylines for each of the original characters, which means cameos are definitely something they have in mind for every original cast member.

Two other characters that could be easily incorporated are Marshall and Lily, especially with Jesse and Sid living in their old apartment. Jason Segel has expressed an interest in reprising his How I Met Your Mother role, and this would be the perfect opportunity to see how the couple has evolved. How he has grown and how that sets Sophie on a different course similar to her discussion with Robin could be the key to helping her climb out from rock bottom. An appearance from Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Father may be the most interesting because of his similarities to Sophie in their goal to find love. Ted could be the key to helping Sophie figure out where to find love, thus revealing who the father is.
