How Many Mandalorians Are There Left In Star Wars?

[ad_1]

The Mandalorian is slowly filling in the gaps in Star Wars’ Mandalore timeline, but how many Mandalorians are there left at this point exactly?

This article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 1.The Mandalorian season 3 is exploring Mandalorian culture and Mandalore’s history in a way that had never been done in live-action, which raises the question of how many Mandalorians are there left in Star Wars. Despite the extensive Mandalorian lore already established in Star Wars, both in the Expanded Universe and the Disney canon, The Mandalorian went for something a bit new with the concept of Foundlings. As a Mandalorian Foundling, Din Djarin has only recently discovered there are other Mandalorian creeds, sects, and beliefs.

The Mandalorian season 1 made it seem as though there were only a handful of Mandalorians left, a significant canon decision considering how important Mandalorians are to the Star Wars universe. However, ever since Mando ran into Bo-Katan and the Nite Owls in season 2, The Mandalorian has been expanding its universe beyond what Din Djarin thought he knew. That includes the number of Mandalorians who still exist.

The Mandalorian Has Shown At Least 42 Mandalorians Still Exist

In The Mandalorian season 3, episode 1, “The Apostate” alone, it is possible to spot at least 41 Mandalorians – including Din Djarin. Most of those are, of course, background characters without a name (and their faces are concealed beneath helmets). Bo-Katan Kryze, meanwhile, was shown working with at least two other Mandalorians in season 2. Finally, one Star Wars Rebels character is known to still be alive around the time of The Mandalorian season 3, episode 1 – Sabine Wren.

With Sabine Wren confirmed to appear in Ahsoka, which is expected to take place close to The Mandalorian, there are at least 44 Mandalorians alive at this point of the Star Wars timeline. That includes both those who were born in Mandalore like Bo-Katan and those like Din Djarin, who were brought into different Mandalorian creeds regardless of whether they were born on the planet of Mandalore. Din, for example, had never actually been on Mandalore until now. That number is expected to change in The Mandalorian season 3, as characters could die and new ones could show up.

Star Wars Portrayed The Great Purge As Mandalorian Genocide – But Was It?

The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett have referred to the Night of a Thousand Tears as a Mandalorian purge, to the point it almost seems to mirror what happened to the Jedi during Order 66. However, not only there are at least 44 confirmed Mandalorians alive during season 3, far more than the number of Jedi believed to have survived Order 66, but there are probably a lot more Mandalorians scattered across the galaxy. It is important to note the The Mandalorian has pointed to different Mandalorian clans and creeds, which means that those following the Armorer are not necessarily the only Mandalorians left.

Mandalore has been in a state of almost-constant crisis since the Clone Wars, during which the Death Watch, working alongside Count Dooku’s Separatist Alliance and later with Darth Maul, tried to end Duchess Satine’s pacifism and bring Mandalore back to its fighting days. By the time Palpatine’s Empire took over the galaxy, a Mandalorian civil war had just ended with the Siege of Mandalore. Star Wars Rebels briefly explored how Mandalorians were now surviving in different points of the galaxy, with Bo-Katan trying to reunite her people under the influence of the Darksaber. As such, regardless of how many appear in The Mandalorian, Mandalorians are likely far from being all gone.

The Mandalorian season 3, episode 1 is now streaming on Disney+. New episodes release Wednesdays.
