Incredible Hulk Actor Returned As Abomination Voice In Shang-Chi

After being spotted in the trailer for Shang-Chi, it is now officially confirmed that Tim Roth returns to voice the Abomination after thirteen years.

The Incredible Hulk star, Tim Roth, reprised his role as Abomination in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It has been thirteen years since audiences last saw Emil Blonsky, a.k.a. the Abomination in the MCU when he was the primary villain in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Due to the film recasting Bruce Banner in later films and it being the lowest-grossing film in the MCU, the film has often been the black sheep of the franchise with the only major recurring element being William Hurt as General Ross in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and most recently, Black Widow.

Yet, it appeared Marvel Studios was making efforts to bring back elements from The Incredible Hulk in recent years. What If…? episode 3 featured recreations of scenes from The Incredible Hulk with Mark Ruffalo incorporated into scenes that previously featured Edward Norton. Abomination was first announced to be returning in the upcoming Disney+ series, She-Hulk, with Tim Roth reprising his role. However, when the second trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings many were surprised to see Abomination fighting Wong, as it has not been reported the character or Tim Roth would be in the film.

Now official confirmation has been made that Tim Roth did reprise his role as Abomination in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In an interview with The Direct, producer Jonathan Schwartz confirmed that Roth voiced the character in the film. Schwartz also went into detail about why Abomination was chosen for the film. Schwartz’s full quote can be read below:

“Roth did some vocalization for us… he certainly was part of that process. There will be more of Abomination to come, so more of that story to be told. With regards to Shang-Chi , it sort of came down to who would be the coolest character for this moment? Who do we want to see in that ring? And then understanding who would make sense for whatever ongoing stories they have going on out there in the bigger universe.”

It’s noteworthy that Schwartz said Roth contributed voice work to the character, hinting that Roth did not provide on-screen motion capture work for Abomination and that the character may be entirely CGI. This could possibly be due to Abomination being a later addition to the story and Roth maybe not officially agreeing to return to the MCU until much later, possibly around the time he was announced to be joining She-Hulk in December 2020. Now that his series, Tin Star, has concluded, Roth’s schedule now may be more open to appearing in more MCU projects.

Abomination’s future in the MCU has been up for question since it was announced the character would return to She-Hulk. With the recent recruitment of John Walker’s U.S. Agent and Yelena Belovia by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the MCU could be building a Dark Avengers team. With Walker and Belovia being dark mirrors of Captain America and Black Widow respectively, it is easy to see how Abomination could serve as the team’s version of the Hulk. The short film, The Consultant, teased that the World Security Council originally wanted Abomination as a member of the Avengers Initiative, so there is precedent in the universe of Abomination to be recruited. How he escaped and what he has been up to since the events of The Incredible Hulk remains a mystery, but there is a chance Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings could provide a clue.
