Just weeks after its rollout, iPhone 14’s ‘Emergency SOS via Satellite’ feature has reportedly saved yet another life, this time in California.

The iPhone 14’s ‘Emergency SOS via Satellite’ has reportedly saved yet another life, this time in California. The news comes a day after the feature was rolled out in multiple European countries, including the U.K., Ireland, France, and Germany. It was rolled out in the U.S. and Canada last month after being announced with the iPhone 14 in September. Emergency SOS via Satellite is available in all the iPhone 14 series devices, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

According to the Montrose Search & Rescue Team, two people were rescued after their vehicle went off the road and slid down the side of a mountain while driving through the Angeles National Forest on Tuesday afternoon. The accident happened almost 19 miles into the forest, and there was no cell phone service. Following the accident, the victims were able to climb out of the car before sending a text using the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on their iPhone 14. The center that received the message then contacted first responders, including the Montrose Search and Rescue Team, the LA Country Fire Department, and the Special Enforcement Bureau – LASD air rescue team.

The rescue team said that the call center provided them with the exact latitude and longitude of the victims, helping the helicopter locate them and send down a paramedic. The victims included a man and a woman in their twenties, and both had what the team described as “mild to moderate injuries.” Once they were found to be in stable condition, a helicopter got them out of the canyon and transported them to a local area hospital.

This is not the first time that the iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via Satellite has proven to be a lifesaver for an iPhone user. Earlier this month, it saved a stranded man in Alaska after he activated it on his iPhone to call for help. Other Apple devices, like the Apple Watch, have also saved lives thanks to their fall-detection feature. Earlier this year, 71-year-old Raylene Hackenwerth of Saint Petersburg, Florida, credited the Apple Watch for saving her life after it auto-dialed 911 when its fall-detection feature detected that she had taken a hard fall.

Emergency SOS via Satellite is a new feature available exclusively for iPhone 14 series devices. The service allows users to send emergency SOS messages to first responders even in areas without cellular reception or Internet connectivity. It is also expected to be helpful for people in the heart of the city if a natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake disrupts the power grid and brings down communication towers. The new iPhone 14 feature is already saving lives and helping people in distress, so it will be interesting to see when it will be expanded to more countries in the future.
