DC Studios co-CEO and filmmaker James Gunn clarify rumors on what the age of Batman will be in the new DC Universe that is currently in the works.

James Gunn clarifies rumors on how old Batman will be in the new DC Universe that is currently in the works. The DCEU is getting closer to its end after having run for exactly ten years this summer after 2013’s Man of Steel kicked off the shared universe. With the launch of DC Studios last fall, a new era is coming for the iconic comic book brand. Gunn and Peter Safran are creating a new interconnected continuity after The Flash’s massive reset. The duo announced the first half of Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” at the end of January, which detailed where they are going with the DC Universe for the next couple of years.

One of the many DC movies and TV shows that are coming from DC Studios is The Brave and The Bold, the start of a new Batman franchise. The story will focus on Bruce Wayne discovering the existence of his biological son, Damian Wayne, who is making his live-action debut.

However, there has been some confusion about the age range that they are looking for with this take on Batman. Various reports have claimed that Gunn had stated that this Batman would be somewhere in his thirties since Superman will be in his twenties. But James Gunn responded on Twitter that Batman’s supposed age is simply speculation, as he has never given a specific range.

How the DC Universe’s Batman Will Differ From Past Versions

What’s important to remember is that The Brave and The Bold is probably not even casting stages yet, since it is in nascent stages of development. Until a writing team and director are set, it’s pointless to speculate on how old Batman will be in the DC Universe. While those details will likely be revealed later this year, DC Studios is already taking the Dark Knight in new directions cinematically. Out of any DC character, Batman has been depicted the most in live-action, both on the big and small screens.

One of the fundamental elements that The Brave and The Bold is presenting is a version of Bruce Wayne who is taking on fatherhood. Even though he has a family bond with various Bat-Family members, the introduction of Damian Wayne is significant. The fifth Robin being his biological son and someone he didn’t even know existed, is new territory for Batman’s live-action history. This allows the reboot to stand out from Robert Pattinson’s Batman, who is in his early days as a crime-fighter.

What is also refreshing for The Brave and The Bold is that this will explore a Batman who already has a Bat-Family established to some degree. Christian Bale’s iteration never had any of the Robins or Batgirls besides him. With Ben Affleck’s Batman, there were more references to other allies, but they were never seen on-screen in the flesh. Hopefully, as 2023 goes forward, more details about the new Batman in the DC Universe will emerge sooner rather than later.
