After scoring acclaim for their take on the beloved character, Jenna Ortega reveals the key Wednesday Addams detail Tim Burton was hyper-focused on during production. The duo worked together for Netflix’s Wednesday, a spinoff of The Addams Family franchise focused on the eponymous teenage daughter as she heads to the private supernatural school, Nevermore Academy. Anticipation was high for Wednesday thanks to Burton’s involvement and Ortega’s rising star power, leading to largely positive reviews and multiple viewership records broken for Netflix, earning it a season 2 renewal order.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While appearing on the recent episode of First We Feast‘s “Hot Ones” series, Jenna Ortega opened up about the making of Netflix’s Wednesday.

In reflecting on her experience working with director and executive producer Tim Burton, the star revealed he was hyper-focused on one key Wednesday Addams detail, that of her hairstyle. Ortega recalled his desire for a thoroughly accurate appearance even led to a two-hour delay on the first day of filming as he did her hair himself. See what Ortega shared below:

Even on the first day when they were trying to establish what my hair was gonna look like we ran two hours behind because ‘No her braids are uneven. This one’s lower, this one’s higher.’ He didn’t like the way that my fringe looked at the time, so he was just, ‘Hey can I do … do you mind if I do that?’ He asked the hairdresser very politely and just kind of did my hair himself.

Why Burton & Ortega Were Perfect For Wednesday

Though his focus on her hairstyle may seem a bit excessive, Burton’s attention to detail goes to show part of why he was perfect to help bring Wednesday to life. Long before directing and executive producing the Netflix series, Burton had even been attached to helm both the 1991 live-action Addams Family movie, only to depart in favor of directing Batman Returns, and a stop-motion animated reboot in the early 2010s that was cancelled in development. Burton’s streak of gothic-tinged movies, namely Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice, had audiences excited to see his take on the Addams Family.

In addition to the show’s overall aesthetics, it became clear Burton also understood the appeal of the ’90s live-action Addams Family movies going into the show’s casting. Not only did he and creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar bring back Christina Ricci, who previously scored acclaim for her performance as Wednesday in the movies, in a new role, but also recaptured the chemistry of Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston as Gomez and Morticia with Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones taking over the parts.

Ortega herself brought a lot of memorable attention to detail in her leading role in Wednesday. The young star pointed out shortly after its release that eagle-eyed viewers may notice her Addams Family character never blinks on camera, while also having choreographed her viral Wednesday dance scene, which she has since expressed regrets for how some of it went. With Wednesday season 2 confirmed to be in the works, one can hope Burton remains on as the director for at least one episode to ensure Wednesday’s hair is kept just right.
